From Faith to Freethought: A Deep Dive into Dan Barker’s Godless
Dan Barker’s Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America’s Leading Atheists is more than a memoir—it is a philosophical reckoning, a theological critique, and a passionate manifesto for secular humanism. In this compelling and deeply personal narrative, Barker recounts his transformation from a devout evangelical preacher to a prominent voice in the atheist movement. The book is…

A Year Long Journey Into Pasta & Leaving Atheism Behind
A Year Long Journey Into Pasta & Leaving Atheism Behind
Over the past year, Atheist Analysis has had the pleasure of getting to know a fine young gentleman named Joey Kirkman. His book Bedtime Bible Stories was a great inspiration for our organization as we looked for tools to provide those in the atheist movement resources to help combat religion. Joey, who has in recent years identified as an anti-theist, and even skeptic, has taken on another…

Atheist Analysis Presents the “Personal Journey Series” – Jonny Brotherton
In my younger days, if I wasn’t at home playing video games like any normal child, I was at church…every time the doors were open. As a pastors kid, church was the ultimate place to play. It had long hallways perfect for bouncy balls, and plenty of pews to hide under. We actually had the popular plastic crawl tubes, slides, globes…

Thoughts on Hell
I was asked the other day what I would do when I die and meet Christopher Hitchens in hell. (I was re-reading “God is not Great”, which apparently didn’t sit well with the person making the inquiry.)
At the time, I responded with a simple, “Say hi, I suppose.”
Thinking on it, though, I feel there would have been a better response. One which I will try my hardest to use if I’m ever asked this or a similar question again. I should have replied:
Should I find myself in hell when my mortal existence ceases, first, I would readily admit that I had been incorrect on the question of the existence of God. If I’m in hell, clearly I got that one wrong; however, I would have no remorse. Why? Because, while it is true in this hypothetical scenario that I had been wrong on the existence of God, there can be no mistake that I was woefully correct on the character of God. A God who sanctions genocide, rape, murder, and torture and threatens His own citizens with ETERNAL torture for refusing to submit to Him is not worthy of worship. If refusing to get down on bended knee in submission to a tyrant is cause for death or torture, then I will take the wrath of that tyrant in full force. I will not regret following my conscience and my moral compass. I will not sacrifice the convictions of my heart for self preservation. And I’d like to think Mr. Hitchens would share my sentiment.
Members of all religions (especially monotheisms) love to try to use fear to force converts. I will not be broken and beaten into terrified submission.
To be clear, I do not see any substantial evidence for the existence of any god, and I see negating evidence for the existence of Yahweh. I do not accept the theory of hell. But next time I’m asked, I’ll be sure to say that I’d rather be wrong with a clear conscience than right and doomed to worship a tyrant every minute for the rest of eternity.
