little athelstan to ease the soul during a long studying session
Athelstan-inspired look
what if one of their raids in England went wrong and like, Aethelwulf somehow captured and tortured Ragnar without Ecbert's knowledge, and Athelstan found and saved him and killed all the guards while being very epic
or!!
Ecbert arrives before Athelstan does and stops them from torturing Ragnar and decides to let him go in hopes of keeping a good relationship, and that's when Athelstan comes and Ecbert hands a hurt Ragnar over to him and he helps him up off the floor gently while he's whimpering in pain
and Athelstan half carries him back to camp and takes care of him and and and
the way Ragnar sees him
i cant wait to wear it again....soon .
Floki and Athelstan- Mirror and Xenopronouns
I know I've talked about Floki and Psi dynamics a lot, but I can't help but think of just Floki stuff, and then I kind of figured something with Athelstan as well, and since technically they are part of Psi's polycule (even if Psi isn't directly in a relationship with Athelstan past like freindship) I thought I'd post them here.
Both Athelstan and Floki go through a bit in their lives where they experiment with Mirror pronouns, but probably for very different reasons at different times to different outcomes (and in different ways).
Athelstan uses mirroring pronouns as a slave, when he is still technically owned by Ragnar. At first it's just he/him because that's what 'he' is called. But then he finds it oddly uncomfortable when 'he' hears Lagertha, or Gyda, or any woman calling 'him' 'he', but not when the men do it. And when 'Psi' does it it feels off. Athelstan would be really confused, and I think Psi would pick up on it and kind of talk to 'him' about it- at this point 'hed' feel like 'his' pronouns don't belong to 'her' and Psi would kind of take that to mean to use mirror pronouns because he respects that even if it's a situation thing for the priest, and just does it, and corrects people gently and explains it so the people around 'him' do it. [Of course not everyone is all into it and many would do it just when they are around, but still]. Eventually though that starts feeling wrong as 'he' comes into himself, and is no longer a slave, but... neither does being called 'he/him'. At first Athelstan thinks that it has to do with the whole mirror thing (how does a person address without possessing personal pronouns) but another Psi talk, and an of handed "there are void pronouns" interests Athelstan, and void agrees to test them out and they feel... oddly right. Even if that wasn't what void always was, void likes voids new pronouns because void is a different person now.
Floki on the other hand uses them later. I don't know when yet but I want to say when Asslug comes into the picture and Ragnar really starts his shit ass behavior and his deep cheating, because Floki feels broken, and like 'he's' not enough for the love of 'his' life. And 'he' knows that Ragnar loves Athelstan when void was using mirror pronouns, so 'he' puts 'himself' into that box of doing the same thing, and it's horrible. It's wrong, and it destroys 'him' more and more, and ruins 'his' mental health. So Psi stops doing it, and when Psi stops others start to stop. Psi just calls Floki; Floki, or the Boat builder, they describe Floki, "my love", "Floki", "Boat Builder", he doesn't use pronouns at all. Just Floki, and it helps. And Floki experiments, not wanting to ever go back to 'he/him' or 'she/her' or 'they/them' because those are other peoples pronouns, not Floki's. Floki can't use 'voi/void' because those are Athelstan's. Floki ultimately prefers to just be described for the most part, but it also is okay with being called 'it', enjoys it actually. Not both at the same time; in context people should either use Floki, or the Boatbuilder, or the likes or it/it's but both are correct for Floki.
