what if one of their raids in England went wrong and like, Aethelwulf somehow captured and tortured Ragnar without Ecbert's knowledge, and Athelstan found and saved him and killed all the guards while being very epic

Ecbert arrives before Athelstan does and stops them from torturing Ragnar and decides to let him go in hopes of keeping a good relationship, and that's when Athelstan comes and Ecbert hands a hurt Ragnar over to him and he helps him up off the floor gently while he's whimpering in pain

when Athelstan said he'll do anything for his found family, even turn on the faith he dedicated his life to and it may yet kill him--

Athelstan runs after Ragnar and kisses him at Uppsala, high on shrooms. Ragnar tries to stop him half-heartedly, saying he doesn't actually mean this, but to no avail, and he can hardly stop himself either, so what he does is stop for just long enough to take some as well so they're equal in this and kisses Athelstan back.

maybe Athelstan doesn't mean it, but maybe he does and this freed him, maybe he does.. Ragnar begs the Gods for it to be real and lets a "please" slip a few times between hot kisses, so Athelstan kisses him harder and touches his chest and nipples and kisses his neck and even reaches between his legs. Athelstan hesitates a bit but he's encouraged by Ragnar's desperate moans and goes on. Ragnar pulls him closer and they just rub up against each other, sinking into the grass, Ragnar in Athelstan's lap.

Ragnar tells Athelstan he was going to sacrifice him and Athelstan isn't nearly as bothered as he should be. Ragnar says he doesn't want to, Athelstan asks if he can stop it, and Ragnar says he can't, so it's his last night unless his God helps him, and Athelstan just kisses him harder, and whether this is right doesn't matter at all anymore, there are just the two of them, they wanted each other from the start and this feels exactly like the Gods' will.
