"Well, he and Drift have all but actually dated so it might have been subconscious on his part." Ness said, which is probably as close as he'd ever gotten to saying something nice about Orion.

"That doesn't really make it better."

"He seemed really broken up about it. Does he know why?" Haven asked.

"Of course. I was nice about it, but I wasn't going to leave him guessing. The way Orion is, he would've overthought things until he had a breakdown."

"Not sure he isn't still."

Athena sighed. "Where is he?"

"Drift took him home before the Cinderella Delusion Squad could nab him."

"That's probably for the best." Athena said.

"Hey Athena. Are you okay?" Haven asked.

"So you heard about the break up, then?"

"Yes." Ness said as he joined them. "Sorry it didn't work out."

"No, you're not, but thanks for the effort." Athena replied.

"You seemed so happy." Haven said.

"We were, but we were better as friends. I started to feel a bit like he was with me to prove he could be with a girl more than he was to be with me as a person. I mean I never questioned he was bi, and I still don't, but it felt like every time I turned around he was staring at Drift's ass or... some other dude. Like he didn't treat me bad or cheat on me, but all the subtle little things kept happening and I realized there wasn't a future. I got out while we could still be friends."

"Maybe. I thought I'd have less doubts the further we got into this relationship, but instead I have more doubts. And you are wanting to plan family visits like we're speedrunning this relationship while still longingly staring at Drift's ass!" Athena paused. "It's making me someone I don't want to be so I'm out."

"I didn't mean to hurt you. If you could give me a chance we could work some of this out."

"Maybe someday, but not until you've gotten Drift out of your system. Nothing can happen until you own up to your feelings and figure out what you actually want. I am not a condolence prize or relationship easy mode, and that's how it feels. So this is goodbye."

"But that’s how it looks.” Athena sighed. “Listen I don’t doubt that you’re interested in me, but if you are entirely honest you like Drift too, right?”

Orion couldn’t look her in the eyes, much less answer her. 

"I want to be somebody's person. I want to be enough for them and them to be enough for me. Not in a delusional perfect couple way, but I don't want to wonder why they're with me or if they are going to peace out on me. I want someone who is going to put in the hard work."

"I want to be that person."

"But you're not. I am already wondering why you aren't with Drift. Like is it because it's easier or safer being with a girl having come from a homophobic town? Is it because he wants commitment and kids? You know I haven't decided if I want to have kids yet, and if that's it…" Athena sighed again. "I am already afraid that if I decide I want bio kids or we have an oops baby that you are going to run for the fucking hills."

"I would never do that."

"Let’s break up" Athena said out of the blue.

"What? Why? Did I do something wrong?"

"Not necessarily." Athena sighed. "It's just not working for me. You're a great boyfriend when it's just us, but when other people are around…"

"I'm an extrovert. I don't mean to ignore you or make you jealous. If there's something I can do to reassure you…"

Athena cut him off. "It's not extraversion that's the problem though. You're fine with Phoenix, Ness, Ajax, Finn, and Andi, but," she paused. "With Drift and Haven you're different. Your eyes follow them the moment they aren't looking. You look longingly at them. Haven at least plays it cool, but Drift still forgets and flirts with you. When you aren't looking he looks heartbroken. They think I don't hear the rumors, but a lot of people, a lot of our friends, view me as a homewrecker who stole you from him."

"That's not true."
