He was also a longtime art educator at Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta’s west side community, Collier Heights... an avid farmer, botanist and historian... and my daddy’s homeboy. You gotta be from here to understand why we hold Baba William as our national treasure and why we all bow to him and people like him. Ever since I was a little girl running around his funeral home while he and Daddy was working. Someone once told me that I did not fit the image of public safety... That my tattoos and “unprofessional” hair would frighten people and make them uncomfortable. No one has ever ran from me or asked me not to touch them. Not old people, young people or people who do not look like me. I’m probably one of the most welcoming, open and warm people you’ve ever met. I’m very respectful of space, culture and religions. You’ll also notice that if you approach me to talk to me, I will take off my sunglasses and depending on the height of the person I’m talking to; I will ask them to sit down if they’re taller or I will get on eye level with them so my energy isn’t dominant or demeaning. I don’t need to tell you not to be afraid of me because nine times out of ten, I don’t scare you. That being said... Next time you see me, dap me up, give me a hug or hand me a snack.
