All I want is a #babydonkey. This year, for our Brazilian #velentinesday, I asked @therealmracai for a bit of an #unusualgift instead of the most traditional ones from the 28 years before that: a #donkey. I want to have one at our #farm in #brazil, @agroflorestavidaforte. It is perfect to help us carry #organicmaterial up and down the hills inside our #atlanticforest. But, alas, I’ve been looking for one since June and they’re nowhere to be found around our farm area, and on the internet (I know, but I do buy everything on th energy lol) they’re absurdly expensive :-( #procurandoumburrico #jegue #mula #asno #burro #jerico pra nossa #fazenda em #teresopolis e não acho. Frilled Coquette by @ciroalbano. Less than three inches long, the Frilled Coquette is the smallest hummingbird in Brazil. It can be found in the Serra do Urubu reserve of northeastern Brazil, where ABC is working with our friends @savebrasil to conserve important tract of Atlantic Forest habitat. The Atlantic Forest ecosystem, a complex mosaic of jungle, mountains, coastal mangroves and dry savannas which may have rivaled the Amazon in biodiversity, once stretched over a million square kilometers from east of Rio de Janeiro to the northern tip of Argentina. A devastating 92% of this ecosystem and it's diverse inhabitants have been demolished by development, including urbanisation, mining, and especially agriculture. The remaining 8% lies in fractured scraps amongst fields of cash crops and degraded land. We can hardly begin to estimate what mysteries have been lost before ever being acknowledged. Within a mere 2.5 acres of one remnant forest, biologists catalogued 450 tree species - more than twice the number found along the entire Eastern US. It would seem hope is lost and the Atlantic Forest may find its place in textbooks alongside dinosaurs and mastadons. But here at Reserva Ecologica de Gaupiacu, there is a dedicated group of people working to preserve what is left and regrow what is lost, collaborating with organizations like @rainforesttrust to protect the forest one slice at a time.
