Yeah I could see her as a badass nonbender. Mainverse Avara is a spirit that used to be a human. :D

Like the Painted Lady and Yue, Avara was likely human once upon a time. However she's long since forgotten who that person was, what they were like, and how they came to be a spirit.
Headcanon
Spirit Avarice favors ambition, whether it is well thought out or not. Like most of Avara's non-human incarnations she is not a moral compass either. Because of this she likely would have supported the previous firelord's goals if she had not met Ling first.
