The Atomic Force Microscope is the closest thing to the platonic ideal of "some kind of science machine" I've ever both seen and used. The software only works on windows 7. It makes horrid noises at you when you tell it to do stuff at too low of an energy. You need to calibrate the laser and the frequency and amplitude of its waves. It was invented by two guys in Germany working under IBM and they got a Nobel Prize for it. It's used to investigate things smaller than I can think and produces really pretty graphs. It took me a week to understand the basic concept of it and it costs tens of thousands of dollars. Something about magnets. Truly incredible beast.

Microtubules (MTs), a key component of the cytoskeleton in eukaryotic cells, serve as scaffolds and play vital roles in cellular processes such as cell division, cell migration, intracellular transport, and trafficking. MTs are composed of α-tubulin and β-tubulin proteins, which polymerize into dimers and assemble into linear protofilaments that form a cylindrical lattice.
