So.. believe it or not, I was originally planning to give Sophos a "love triangle."
Why Mara? Don't you usually dislike love triangles?
yes, and I probably was on crazy in the head thinking about it.
I'm not exactly against WRITING a love triangle, but this just didn't fit with the story at all. I wanted it to be more about family relationships than romance. While there is a romantic relationship, and some mentions of Sophos' "ex," Rhian's misfortunes, and of course the lust-driven habits of the empire, it's not the main point. In fact, Sophos and his love interest take time to actually fall in love and act more like friends for a large part of the story.
I was originally planning to have Sophos have an arranged marriage to a princess and THEN meet Victoria, but hell no. I hated that idea. It's just.. bleh and too trite.
Also, Rhian had Rhian 2 and Japeth solely for keeping his position on the throne, but I scrapped that. I'm not fond of Rhian 1 being any sort of parent, and adding more kids just felt like it would drag on the plot. Plus, it felt too much like Magical Crowns. Also, I debated Rafal and Sophie's twins surviving long enough to be a threat, but again, too much. And plus, the route I went fit the dark, depressing theme I was going for, and makes the conflicts even deeper. Sophos, of all people, is the heir, and sometimes he doesn't know how to feel. It also serves to reinforce how he never felt like anyone's "first choice" or special one.
