So in light of discontinuing my fic and going on a slight writing hiatus (after it, I'll publish the more exciting chapters, but warning, they will pretty much be rough drafts, if I don't edit them)
So here are some spoilers or extra details:
Let's go back to history ✨
Sophie actually disliked Victoria from the beginning, though she realizes it later. She was the youngest daughter of the King of Maidenvale and the youngest sister of Princess Maria. Maria was a former "love interest" for Rafal, but he was never interested in her that way. Maria moved on and married someone else, but Sophie always harbored resentment with that family, and Victoria remembers how Sophie would always give her evil looks.
Rafal planned to annex Maidenvale after an agreement NOT to. He was doing under-the-table stuff with the Falaists. They are actually not necessarily just some political, anti-Rhian protest group, but existed long before Rafal's death. Virgil is actually a certain Captain Porrima who was Rafal's spy to Maidenvale and in charge of reporting progress with the Falaists' plans. Otherwise... why are they called FALAists after all? Also, many of them are lowkey obsessed with him: Virgil, Adelie event though he doesn't return the feelings.
Rafal was genuinely devastated about the mass assassination at Princess Lorraine's wedding. He almost lost Sophie shortly before that, so that maybe made him a little more sensitive to the situation. Virgil lied about the situation and spun it around to make him look like a victim. He did try to persuade Rafal to make his move but he thought that would appear too suspicious. People were already suspecting Rafal was behind it.
Rafal also was using Marialena for prophecies and so forth. Dishonest things, honestly. But he kept her imprisoned and ensured she said nothing under pain of death. Marialena said nothing because Rafal would be dead soon after and because she's a seer.
Midas is not mentioned often in history books of the empire, but he's there. He exists as a former lover. (Nothing that lasted long, though and nothing physical, either,)
Rafal planned to slowly convince Sophie and use his children to get Camelot from Tedros and Agatha.
Rafal's reign had far more violent and gruesome forms of executions and plenty of them done for petty reasons. Rhian curbed some of these and tried to make prisons more humane.
Rafal was proud of his military and gave many incentives for citizens to join, like money, free education, jobs in the palace during times of peace, etc. Many of his military members were Falaists.
Rafal was able to get answers from the other world, as well as Marialena, about Sophos and what would happen. That's why he was so prepared with a will and so forth. What no one told him was specifics, like Rhian killing him, etc, etc. At best, he thought he would have to abdicate and leave for Sophie's summer palace. He didn't think it was fair for Sophie to lose her power, so she would be Sophos' regent.
Rhian was poisoning Rafal over time so his magic would slowly become weaker. He was planning his murder with Garrett. Rhian used extra doses to drug the stymphs. Rafal thought that he was slowly dying and that the Storian was punishing him, thus his reason for abdication and relocation.
Rafal had a gift box, where he collected things for his kids, where they would eventually be given to them. Sophie was in control of it in case something happened. Sophos' pin was one of those things.
Sophos was supposed to live in Rafal's room but Rhian felt it was too haunted for a little boy.
Rafal didn't really genuinely invest himself in the religion of the non-Storian dominated world; he was just there for the magic that helped him. The gods were beings he believed he could bargain with and command at will. He was supposed to be a human pen to replace the Storian, already an outcast in the eyes of the gods, and he could understand the language found on the Pen and the similar one of the other world.
Rafal killed their stepfather after he constantly harmed them, and especially harmed Rhian physically and mentally. They ran away into where the current imperial capital was, because they feared their opportunistic mother would rat them out. The Mistral sisters were distant relations who offered to help them. Rhian trusted them immediately and preserved them with a spell. Rafal didn't. Shortly after, they became chosen to rule as the new emperors. Their mother killed their biological father and escaped to the Endless Woods, then married some random sorcerer man as a cover and so her children could have a father figure. [🙄] He knew those weren't his kids and the whole town got the idea.
That's all for now. Ask any questions if needed.
