Making the unconscious conscious is a process that begins with being aware of the recurring themes in our lives. It's important to consider what we are trying to work through to heal when we experience something relational that triggers past pain. At times, we may not be aware of where that hurt originates because it's due to a lack of love and care rather than a specific traumatic event that the trigger reenacts. Though relationships can trigger us, they also provide an opportunity to heal, especially when both parties recognize that the intensity of the emotions is often linked to past experiences rather than each other. Ideally, this is how we recreate our present in a way that doesn't reenact the past. Therapy is a positive tool to move us into the present. It is not a pain-free process. As this episode shows, it is like an archeological dig, which is a lot of work, but the treasure uncovered—the freedom from past pain and the ability to form healthier relationships—is worth it to live a freer life.
