Studio Blog: Part 1
Good evening everyone, we are at the heart of it, and we are a post-hardcore band from NH/MA and we are in the process of recording our first record. So in the interest of preserving the techniques and process going into this monumental feat in the beginning of our existence.
Song 1 - Intro So this was a bit of a weird one to start on as it was one of the last ones we wrote. It’s not exactly a stand alone song, but acts as an introduction to the band and to the record and the themes we plan to expound upon.
Essentially the track is centered around the drums and vocals, using the guitars and bass more as auxiliary components. For all of the tracks we’re using a DW Collectors edition drum kit with a 24” kick and primarily zildjian cymbals. Honestly I’m not entirely sure what M has set up in regards to drum mics other than the D112 on the kick and the Apex 210 Ribbon for a room mic (though that room mic may change on future tracks). On guitars with this I used a Rickenbacker 650C for the “noise” track, which is essentially the Rick into an M13 using the partical verb effect through an orange ad30. This was close miked with an sm57 close to the dust cap. On the more driving track I am using a heavily modified fender telecaster with a hotrails bridge pickup through a Marshall JMP into a 1960a cab. Bass was a Squier p-bass loaded with basslines run into a Radial DI box. Vocals were tracked on a Neumann TLM49 into a UA 610 Solo. All the other tracks were run into an M-Audio Octane preamp into a 2626 firewire interface.
Song 2 - Drums are the same as above Guitars - for the rhythm guitars I used the same Rickenbacker and Telecaster into either the AD30 or the JMP both running into the 1960A cab. Mics were a Shure SM57 off-center with an Apex 210 Ribbon centered on the speaker cone. Lead guitars was a Hagstrom Swede into one of the above two amps. Bass - On this we used the same bass and DI as above but split the signal between the clean DI and a dirty track using an OCD pedal. Vocals (still in progress) Rack gear - We upgraded the AD/DA converter to an Apogee Symphony I/O 16 Channel along with upgrading our preamps to 2 Vintech 573’s
Song 3 - This was last sunday so it’s the most fresh in my mind. Drums are the same again as above. For guitars I used the same two guitars. For this track though I ran the AD30 through it’s own speakers for one take utilizing an SM7 close up on the cap mixed with a AKG C414XLS set up in hypercardioid placed back about ten feet to get a bit of distance on the sound. The doubled track is Telecaster into Orange again using a more dirty tone with an e906 instead of the sm7 Lead guitar was again the Hagstrom into the marshall rig. This was only single tracked with a EV/Blue Raven mic which sounded great for this track really adding some sparkle on this pretty wooly guitar tone. Of course our studio rig has changed a bit and we are now running 4 vintech 573’s.b Bass was an Fender American Special P-Bass with the signal once again split between a sansamp bass driver and a clean direct signal, both being fed into the vintech’s.
Vocals - (in progress)
That’s it for now. More to come
