    𝖔𝖍  𝖎𝖙  𝖜𝖆𝖘  𝖏𝖚𝖘𝖙  𝖙𝖔𝖔  𝖒𝖚𝖈𝖍  𝖋𝖚𝖓  𝖙𝖔  𝖜𝖎𝖓𝖉  𝖍𝖊𝖗  𝖚𝖕.   she  made  it  so  easy  too,  the  way  she  would  just  react  to  him  and  it  just  spurred  him  on  even  more.   duncan  liked  having  courtney's  attention,  it  didn't  matter  if  she  was  yelling  at  him  or  calling  him  all  sorts  of  names,  she  was  focused  on  him  and  it  just  made  him  feel  alive  in  a  way.   oh,  he  was  going  to  get  himself  in  more  trouble  if  he  kept  pushing  her,  but  fuck,  it  was  just  too  much  fun.   plus  she  was  kinda  cute  when  she  got  angry.   and  by  kinda  cute,  he  meant  hot  as  hell.   the  way  she  looked  at  him  with  those  big  brown  eyes  and  he  just  couldn't  help  but  get  caught  up  in  them.   the  way  her  hand  trembled  when  she  got  super  angry.   the  way  she  got  a  little  pink  in  the  face  as  she  got  fired  up.   she  was  just    𝖎𝖓𝖈𝖗𝖊𝖉𝖎𝖇𝖑𝖊   in  a  way  that  other  girls  weren't  and  he  couldn't  just  ignore  her,  or  act  like  she  wasn't  having  some  kind  of  effect  on  him.

    𝖍𝖊  𝖈𝖔𝖚𝖑𝖉𝖓'𝖙  𝖇𝖚𝖙  𝖘𝖒𝖎𝖗𝖐  𝖘𝖔𝖋𝖙𝖑𝖞  𝖆𝖘  𝖍𝖎𝖘  𝖍𝖆𝖓𝖉  𝖒𝖔𝖛𝖊𝖉  𝖙𝖔  𝖕𝖗𝖊𝖘𝖘  𝖆𝖌𝖆𝖎𝖓𝖘𝖙  𝖍𝖎𝖘  𝖑𝖎𝖕𝖘,   blowing  a  kiss  in  her  direction  and  he  already  knows  he's  set  off  before  he's  moving  from  where  he's  sat  to  go  and  slide  in  beside  her,   "   good  mornin'  princess,  you're  lookin'  especially  radiant  today,    "   flirting  was  the    𝖇𝖊𝖘𝖙   way  to  push  her  buttons  because  she  always  reacted  so  fiery  to  him.   was  it  completely  fair?   no.   he  knew  how  to  take  no  for  an  answer,  but  she  never  actually  said  no.   she  would  just  call  him  names  and  roll  her  eyes,  but  never  did  she  actually  tell  him  no,   "   did  you  sleep  well?   i  had  the  most  amazin'  dream  about  you,    "

THERE IS A SMUDGE ON HIS PHONE SCREEN which has him concerned.  the blemish is strategically placed over his cheek in the selfie he had just taken, which leaves justin mulling his reflection in the mirror in worry.  he runs his hand up his face, searching for an imperfection that isn’t there, then to the small screen in his hand that shows him something else entirely.  “hey -- courtney -- ??” there is mild concern in his voice, but he needs her as soon as he hears the door open.  “can you LOOK AT ME for a sec ??”

a beach day -- as far away from wawanakwa as possible -- with the family is much deserved.  of course, they’ve rented a cabana, and ophelia and princeton are just outside it, playing in the sand ( phi phi is being a perfectionist about the castle turrets, and princeton’s gathered some choice shells to decorate it with ); the weather is hot and the sun is bright and the water looks just right.

justin slips his hand into his wife’s, pulling her attention back to him.  “how about we test that water out, huh ??”

IT’S EASY TO REMINISCE. it always has been for him as they sit comfortably intertwined, hands fiddling with hers. time passes and they’re not saying MUCH — they don’t have to. it was nice to enjoy her company without feeling too pressured to keep CONSTANT conversation. yet , he feels the urge to break it as a memory FLOODS through him. “ I’ll always remember the sound of the stereo. “ he goes back to that one party he’d been strung along to , where they ended up as the subject of someone’s idea of truth or dare , STUCK in the closet but it ended up being one of the best nights of his life. “ the dim of the lights... and “ he pauses very briefly. “ the scent of your hair. “ ( he only hopes the last part doesn’t sound too creepy as if he makes a habit of smelling someone’s hair , but she’d been so close he couldn’t help but take notice. )

    ARMS  WRAP  AROUND  HER  WAIST,     smiling  as  he  looked  out  over  the  balcony  of  their  hotel  where  he  had  found  her  standing  in  the morning  sunlight,  pressing  a  gentle  kiss  to  her  cheek,     “      good  morning,  princess,     ”      he  said  softly,  leaning  his  head  against  hers  and  he  sighed  softly,  feeling  happy  and  content.      they  were  in  paradise,  just  the  two  of  them  for  a  few  weeks,  enjoying  his  winnings  and  enjoying  some  well  deserved  time  together,     “      how  did  you  sleep?     ”

   he’s fallen into some kind of sad routine since running away .       constantly  switching  from  alex’s  couch,   to  reggie’s,   to   sometimes   bobby’s  really  makes  luke  appreciate  the  few  constants  he  has  left  in  his  life.      this  little  corner  of  the  boardwalk  he  uses  for  busking  is  supposed  to  be  one  of  them,    but  today,    it’s  occupied  by  sharply  -  dressed  brunette  and  her  very  organized  booth.       luke  continues  to  absentmindedly  strum  his  guitar  as  a  weird,    territorial  feeling  turns  in  his  gut.        OUT  OF  ALL  OF  THE  SPOTS  BY  THE  BEACH,   SHE  HAD  TO  PICK  HIS.       there’s  next  to  no  one  in  front  of  her,    but  that  doesn’t  stop  her  from  calling  out  to  passerby     ;     it’s  something  he  can’t  criticize  without  being  dubbed  a  hypocrite,   because  that’s  basically  what  he  does  all  day,   hoping  someone  will  get  hooked  on  his  melodies  and  spot  him  some  change.       it  could  be  kind  of  fun  to  be  on   the  other  side  of  things   for  once.  

     ❛    —    what’cha  selling  ?   ❜         his  mouth  opens,   but  the  music  doesn’t  stop,   a  relentless  strumming  as  his  arm  continues  to  work  back  and  forth.       ❛    normally  they  save  these  spots  for  poor,   booth  -  less  people  like  me.   ❜
