Unserious edling au where Ed works in childcare and Ling keeps trying to flirt with him whenever he picks up his kid half-sister Mei
AU Thursday: Another Brain Battle
Me: *has been listening to Christmas music for at least two weeks at my job*
My Brain: Hey, all this Christmas music has inspired me!
Me: Has it now?
My Brain: Yes! We should totally do a 1920s “big jazz band” AU with Victor, Victoria, Emily, Bonejangles, Lizzie, and Alice!
Me: *blink blink* . . .Okay, first of all, I don’t think any of the Christmas songs I’ve listened to are in fact jazz, and I’d wager none of them are older than the 1940s (at least recording-wise; obviously some of the traditional carols are older). Second, the 20s have never really been an area of interest for me before. What’s really going on?
My Brain: Oh, come on, I’m just expanding my horizons! You saw a post recently about how the 1920s were a lot more interesting than the history books make them out to be --
Me: *stares*
My Brain: . . .aren’t the twenties when H.P. Lovecraft wrote most of his stuff
Me: *snatching up the broom* KNEW IT
Edling avatar au ft. Avatar Ling, earthbenders Ed and Al, and waterbender Mei. HEAR ME OUT OKAY
Ed and Al being the starting companions means the order of elements is changed so Ling has to learn earth first (eventually from Ed), and the North Pole plot happens second. Before meeting Ling, Ed and Al trained their bending under Izumi's guidance—who invented metalbending in secret.
She's not out to call attention to herself with such a dangerous and easy-to-weaponize skill, so she just taught its basics to Ed and Al (after much pestering from them). After she's put her foot down and refuses to teach them more, Ed still wants to pursue metalbending further, so he builds his meager starting skills throughout journeying with Ling.
Al seems to struggle more with metalbending, not being able to even do it at the start because—according to Izumi—he's too gentle. He's not prone to as much stubbornness as Ed, which is pretty necessary for metalbending. Al will eventually learn to compensate this by steeling his will instead. This shift occurs around mid-series.
Ling and Mei aren't related here, but they still come from similar backgrounds of feeling pressured by their family/ancestral histories. Mei initially can't stand Ling's "carefree" attitude while she seems to shoulder the burden of her entire clan up North, but she does learn to see past Ling's walls. The whole carefree thing is just an act, after all. Nobody is more burdened than the Avatar.
And, yeah, this does mean that that one asshole general in book 2 would fake-drown Ed instead of fake-rock-burying him to trigger Ling's avatar state, hehehe.
Because I love pain and suffering: has anyone considered an edling Hadestown au?
Ed and Ling as Eurydice and Orpheus respectively (duh), Greed as Hermes (DUH), and Bradley as Hades. Ed is a hungry young boy desperate to care for his little brother; this selflessness charms Ling from the very first day and he profuses his love. Eventually, however, their poor reality sets in, and Ed reverts to a desperate mentality. He needs to feed Al any way, any how—and Bradley is a smart, wrathful man who knows he's losing his wife and child with each new springtime and is in need of something to take it all out on.
You know how the story goes from there <3
Edgreedling Project Hail Mary au HEAR ME OUT
So, Eridians as Xerxians, okay? And Xerxians, in this case, are humanoid creatures resembling certain mineral types. Greed the Xerxian is made of, what Ling the human roughly translates as, diamond; Greed's partner back home—whom he yearns for with an uncharacteristic softness—is made of gold, Ling also translates. Ling dubs the name that Greed spits out as Edward, from a movie that they'd been watching together. As Ling and Greed bond more and more, Ling notices increased statements of the nature of Edward would like you. Ling thinks, if he likes Greed this much, then maybe he would like Edward too like Greed says.
Please please tell me you see the vision PLEASE
So like. Totally just for shits and giggles and not at all seriously, has anyone considered, maybe
