This is a newer concept within digital marketing, one that really started emerging around 2015. I’m really getting into alpha and beta territory here. With the growth of mobile smartphones skyrocketing, I expect this audio beacon concept to continue to grow in coming years.
Before I define audio beacon, let’s talk about some background.
Many of us use mobile smartphones.
Many of us use our mobile smartphones (and other mobile devices, such as tablets) while watching TV.
Advertisers spend lots of money advertising on TV.
Given these background concepts, audio beacon technology has emerged as a way to tie together TV advertising with digital marketing. TV advertisements are very expensive. Those advertising on TV want to know if their ads are effective. They also want to get full yield on their advertising dollars.
Some TV commercials now have an audio beacon at the end, basically a noise that is inaudible or not noticeable to humans. However, it’s totally audible to your mobile smartphone.
When you install certain apps on your mobile smartphone, audio beacon recognition technology is making its way onto your phone via SDKs (software developer kits). The technology is there and listening.
If you hear a commercial and then go to that advertiser’s site to make a purchase, the audio beacon tracking technology bridges the cross-device gap, telling the advertiser that their TV commercial yielded a sale. If you hear a commercial and then start seeing ads on your phone for the same product, it’s possible that your phone picked up an audio beacon signal, allowing the advertiser to target you cross-device (TV and smartphone).
This technology is very new. It’s by no means perfect. I’m just starting to hear about it (pun intended), and I know it has a long way to go. However, it is one of the most interesting concepts in digital marketing analytics I have encountered in recent years. I also think it brings up some important privacy discussions as well.
Speaking of apps, I just wrote a post called An App A Week. I have been following this app a week strategy for a few weeks now and it has really upped my game in digital marketing and business overall. Thanks for reading!
