This piece is the climax of 'Tristan and Isolde', an intensely romantic and devastatingly tragic Wagner Opera.

At the beginning of the Opera, a few unresolved discords in the music sets up a subtle tension, audiences longing to hear the chords resolved. After 4 hours of this tension building, the psychological mind game climaxes in the aria in this clip.  Its like a damn wall of tension, of love and loss and longing, breaks down and washes over you like a serene force of nature. In context with the rest of the Opera, i imagine it would be a very intense experience. 

This particular staging is pretty good, best I could find. I believe it could be done better in terms of blocking and physicality although I suspect the director just wanted to let the music speak for itself.
