Helena mumbled out a curse as she straightened her collar for the eighth time, despite it already being straight. Just being in the hall outside the classroom, with its tiny lockers and colorful posters adorning the walls, was making her shift uncomfortably.
Renee should be doing this. Renee would know how to do this. Not me for Christ’s sake.
A hand covered her own fidgeting fingers, “Relax, ‘Lena,” Dinah didn’t even try to hide her smirk, “you’re going to rip it off if you don’t stop messing with it.”
Dinah looked cool and calm as could be, as if this was something she did everyday. Dressed in a smart button down with a smarter pencil skirt and blazer on top, she looked every bit the part of ‘concerned guardian.’ At least one of them did.
Helena breathed in and out, like Harley taught her. “Renee should be here. I don’t know how to do this.”
“Yeah, you’ve mentioned.” Helena held her breath as Dinah leaned in closer to re-straighten Helena’s collar, face burning and palms sweating. Once finished, she leaned back in her chair, studying her nails. “But Renee has that meeting, and we all know Harley can’t come. Plus, this is better anyway. You’ll get to ask all the questions I know are burning in that pretty head that you would’ve had me or Renee ask and then reported back, anyway.” She peered at Helena out of the corner of her eyes, smirking.
“Well, excuse me for caring!” The quick flare of rage burst out of her before she could stop it. She had been working on controlling her ‘rage issues,’ but every once in a while a little rage still slipped out. Sue her.
Dinah was looking at her with pursed lips and raised brows, smile big and bright. Helena’s heart fluttered at that look and smile. Dinah had the nicest smile, from the big, carefree ones that only broke to let out a laugh to the lazy, soft ones she always gave Helena in the early morning, face still heavy with sleep. She grabbed Dinah’s hand, resting on her knee, and received a reassuring squeeze in return.
“Better get all that out now before we meet the teacher, babe.”
