He woke with a start, heart racing and body drenched in sweat. It took far longer than he was proud of to realize he was home, in his own bed, and safe. When the scenes continued to play through his mind, he let out a keening sound before curing in on himself, sobbing and hating that he still couldn’t escape his nightmares.

“It’s just a black eye, it’s nothing,” he muttered, glancing over his shoulder for a moment before going back to trying to assess the damage. It hadn’t been his intention to get into an argument, but he had never been one to sit idly by when someone was trying to force themselves onto a woman. “Don’t pretend to care.”

August was quiet as he came inside, the infant cradled close to his chest and swaddled as best as he could manage to keep her safe from the cold. Chase was going to kill him, he was pretty certain of that, but he just wanted to make sure the baby was safe. 

“Please don’t be pissed at me...” he murmured, biting at his lower lip as he stood behind the couch.

Random facts that kind of hurt me: August never really recovers from losing Chase. He stops adopting kids after Chase dies and has no interest in dating either. He puts his focus on their kids, on making sure they're okay, but he never really recovers from that loss.

August stilled at that, trying not to look...hopeful. Chase never initiated contact, never asked for it and he was terrified of ruining the moment, of scaring him off. “I’d never say no to you,” he answered softly, the weight of truth nearly tangible.
