i like the idea that the backrooms slightly has a mind of its own (it is albrecht's stronghold, an orokin creation) that can alter itself to embody the owner of the stronghold. with albrecht, it was his laboratory, his center of power and control of 1999 - where he created the techrot and everything. it may not have been that exact room, but it came to the drifter anyway, marked with a scar of the void. birds of a feather.
but, a base: it suits the drifter at first glance. here is your arsenal, here is where you can tend to your atomicyle, here is to rest, and here is your helminth. it is a bare bones warehouse fit for a traveler out of time who is here to do a singular job: save entrati.
the drifter stays, of course. the time loop encompasses höllvania and the drifter stays, lingers in 1999 and befriends the hex, gets closer to them. maybe even falls in love.
the change in the backroom is... gradual. it is a slow thing, stretching itself out - testing the boundaries of how far the space can be stretched. here is a kitchen, here is a dining table; your weapon arsenal and warframes are no longer the first thing you see when you enter - as they are not the first thought on the drifter's mind. here they have their own room now, tucked away underneath the staircase. helminth, too, hidden away - no need to horrify the hex, after all. and how much that thought sits in the drifter's mind when the helminth calls for its demon master.
the first floor is open, artificial sunlight filtering in through the windows. here is your dining table, here is your kitchen where you've been learning to cook; here is the small study where you read the books and comics they gift you; here is the common room with all the various games amir wants you to play; here is where you are becoming more than just the drifter.
imagine the drifter walking around just to look for something and suddenly realizing that the backrooms is larger, full of life - shining brighter, the windows aren't so far away; there's this realization that the rooms are different - there's actual rooms. guest rooms, bedrooms, libraries, computer rooms. the backrooms slowly expanding into a home for the drifter, over the course of their growth and relationships with the hex.
