Scholar! Grant me the understanding and wisdom to continue on my path. All of us. As this pilgrimage comes to a close, so much has changed. It is through your river that we shall come out anew, our once blissful ignorance shaken. The more knowledge I gain, the more I am certain I know nothing.

I had brought those now close to me to gather and get to know one another, also to bring up a situation that has now found its way into my lap...
Hestia De'bayle: "Rageant, good evening. Quarcy, you as well. Law, thank you for coming," Hestia notes each of them as they enter. "And Killian. Looks like that is all of us. At the same time too," she snorts.
Killian De'bayle shuffles inside nervously, clutching his cane to him. He doesn't respond to Hestia, instead choosing an out of the way corner to stand.
Quarcy Questant puts away the book to assemble with the others.
Lawrence Wallace steps to a more empty part of the room, giving Hestia a curt nod in greeting.
Hestia De'bayle: "Killian. Join the group please."
Killian De'bayle: "Join? But I'm here..."
Hestia De'bayle: "Stand closer to us."
Killian De'bayle manages a step or two closer!
Lawrence Wallace: "So. What exactly was the purpose of gathering us all together?"
Hestia De'bayle: "Now then, thank you all for coming tonight. I wanted you all to be properly introduced to one another, as you are all accepted as being a formal gathering of allies I have created. So," she looks toward Law, motioning specifically toward Quarcy and Rageant."
Lawrence Wallace: "Mmn. My name is Lawrence Wallace, but I insist you call me Law. Hestia has decided I should hold the mantle of Nald'Thal."
Quarcy Questant: " Law, then. Well met once more "
Hestia De'bayle: "What goals might you wish for us to partake in along side you, Law?" Hestia asks, "as we are as much your allies as you are mine."
Lawrence Wallace: "Protection of the innocent. Seeing those who seek to take their unfair advantages of the world are forced to pay the price for their evils."
Hestia De'bayle: "If ever you find yourself with a quest that you need assistance on, we shall be there to answer the call. You have my word."
Quarcy Questant: " Ah, a reason to step out of the library "
Hestia De'bayle: "Onto you next, Quarcy. Please, introduce yourself as you see fit."
Quarcy Questant: " Quarcy. I assume Thaliak's libraries and name. Please seek me out if ever you need to seek knowledge in my meager pages "
Hestia De'bayle: "And what quests might you ask we partake on, in the name of your virtue?"
Quarcy Questant: " It's my role to help this house in the quest for truth. Finding answers where decisions drive us to anxiety "
Quarcy Questant: "But once in a while a quest for a book or two is not amiss "
Hestia De'bayle: "Understood. The quest for knowledge is a valuable one, and one we all could benefit from," she turns toward Rageant, "our newest face. If you would?"
Rageant Lacordaire: "I take the name Rageant Lacordaire, the namesake of my fallen mentor, that I may honor his wisdom and deeds; the good Dame names me her Althyk, for my enduring wisdom, my commitment to self-improvement, and my austerity. I am a believer that we are small pieces of our world, and that by bettering ourselves, we change the whole. And as for a quest... I've nothing yet to offer, but a strong inkling of inexorable curiosity that must needs be addressed... when the time is due, of course."
Hestia De'bayle: "When you find it fit to inform us, I will be listening," Hestia nods. "Thank you. Killian," she looks over toward the man, that in which everyone in the room already knew. But she of course, was going to offer him that courtesy nonetheless.
Killian De'bayle: "What? Yes?" Killian twists his cane between his hands.
Hestia De'bayle: "Though everyone here knows who you are, introduce yourself as they have."
Killian De'bayle: "Oh...I'm...Killian. Um, Killian de Bayle, and...I'm supposed to be Azeyma," Killian says awkwardly.
Hestia De'bayle: "And your quests by virtue? What do you fight for?"
Killian De'bayle: "I just...want to help people," Killian mumbles.
Hestia De'bayle: "Good," she smiles lightly. "Now that that is out of the way, these men and myself are your allies. Feel free to make yourself acquainted with them as you see fit. They offer you virtues you lack, so their skills are of most importance. Speaking of," she gestures up a hand, "something has happened, as of recent."
Quarcy Questant: " Oh ? " Quarcy quirks up a brow.
Lawrence Wallace: "And what would that be?"
Hestia De'bayle: "A woman of Ishgard I met recently named Fiona Delaine came to me seeking consolation. At the border to Coerthas and the Shroud, there was seemingly some... dark magic brewing. The involvement of pigmen of the sort. She was a bit emotional, all the details were hard to grasp. They maimed her sister. Ripped the arms out and gouged her friends eyes out. She is reseasonly infuriated. She wishes to make the trek there again tomorrow, and hunt them down for what they have done. She sought me as her companion. I have decided I am bringing two of you. The two I believe best suited for a job potentially delving into that of void... Thaliak and Althyk. You will be accompanying me."
Killian De'bayle sucks in a horrified breath. "What?"
Rageant Lacordaire: "I was well-studied on the topic, I shall endeavor to prime myself on it again."
Lawrence Wallace: "Very well. Do keep an eye on your backs out there. Ambushes are a favored tactic of beastmen."
Hestia De'bayle: "Indeed. 'Twas why she was present with me last night. I was comforting her from her state of shock. She is a voidsent hunter herself, and that was a rescue mission gone wrong. I see it ill-fit to deny her my company. I wish to rid this world of its wretches. And that means all," Hestia turns to Law, nodding. "I shall wish to keep you both on standby at a distance. I believe with Rageant and Quarcy's knowledge, we should be able to safely see her to this location and allow her her vengeance."
Hestia De'bayle: "I also wish to mediate this. Vengeance is a furious inferno that would sooner consume that who would allow it to. I will not let her to such a thing."
Hestia De'bayle: "Does such work with you, Quarcy?"
Quarcy Questant: " Our goal then- to neutralize these voidsent ? "
Killian De'bayle 's shoulders droop a little.
Quarcy Questant: " Or simply let this fair dame have her justice ?"
Hestia De'bayle: "She does not want them neutralized. She wants them slaughtered. Who am I to deny her such? We will simply be there to make sure that job is done without hitch. She deserves her justice, and we will be protecting innocents who might fall to these pigmens digusting antics."
Quarcy Questant: " Understood "
Hestia De'bayle: "I trust in your ability, Quarcy, to see that this situation remains... contained?"
Quarcy Questant: " If it's voidsent, I have the broad strokes of it. However the creature itself might be new even for me. "
Hestia De'bayle: "We will reconvene with her soon. I will have her explain more then, especially now that she is calmer," Hestia turns toward Killian. "Killian, you too will be on standby. The void can be deeply troubling on your mind and if something goes wrong, I will need a healer nearby to immediately reach out to. Does this sit well with you?"
Killian De'bayle: "You...want me to come with you?"
Hestia De'bayle: "From a distance, yes. It is a strategic point. To keep you away from the potential void taint, but also utilize your abilities. You are a very important asset to us."
Killian De'bayle: "I--I said okay, I said okay," Killian murmurs uncomfortably. "I'll do that."
Hestia De'bayle: "Alright," Hestia sighs, glancing around the others. "Then that is the plan for now. I shall see to getting in contact with Miss Delaine and seeing when she might wish to meet up and debrief. Thank you all for coming, and do feel free to approach me with any personal quests you might have."
Quarcy Questant: " I've got a bit of reading up to do "
Rageant Lacordaire: "Do you practice magick, Thaliak? Thaumaturgy, arcanism, perhaps?"
Quarcy Questant spies a demonology book in the corner and started flipping into the pages. " .... yes "
Quarcy Questant found it oddly difficult in answering such a question.
Lawrence Wallace: "Fairly self explanatory. I'll be at the ready whenever you make the call."
Hestia De'bayle: "Let us hope it does not come, a call to you would only be in case of emergency."
Hestia De'bayle: "Expect the debriefing to occur tomorrow, more than likely. From the sounds of it, she wished to meet before we made our venture out."
Quarcy Questant: " I imagine... much fire would be needed for this one.. " Quarcy turned the page.
Lawrence Wallace: "If there's nothing else?"
Rageant Lacordaire: "Are you well, Killian?"
Hestia De'bayle: "You are free to leave now if you wish, unless there were any lingering questions?"
Rageant Lacordaire: "Sorry, you say? All is forgiven. It may offer thee some comfort to know thine own struggles are somewhat distantly familiar to mine own."
Quarcy Questant mumbles about the demonology in the shroud.
Lawrence Wallace: "Goodbye, then. It was good to meet you all, and feel free to call upon me should you ever need aid."
Hestia De'bayle: "I will Law, soon."
Killian De'bayle: "You...I think...you mentioned that before," Killian says quietly. "I didn't want to do that. I know...I probably didn't hurt you, but...I didn't want to. I'm sorry."
Quarcy Questant: " As ever, well met "
Lawrence Wallace casts Killian a look that was equal parts worry and exhaustion.
Hestia De'bayle: "I hear your murmurings on demonlogy. Have you found something?"
Rageant Lacordaire: "No battle worth winning is won by a single fell swoop. Seek wisdom from the experience and carry it forward in your travails with dignity."
Quarcy Questant: "Only that voidsents from the shroud are especially primordial in age. Concerning in the least. Nothing else seems to avail itself unless I research more on the matter."
Killian De'bayle: "I...I'm trying. I talked to Hestia...I don't think...the way she was trying...was working. I don't think...they should...be forced out," Killian manages with some difficulty.
Quarcy Questant: " The victim... what was she like?"
Rageant Lacordaire: "Forced out, no, except by you - but you should do so when you are ready. You can strengthen thyself to achieve this, and seek wisdom from those who face similar struggles. There is myself, and a wealth of literature for the topic. Mayhaps in time you will cease to dread the foe, but instead relish the chance to test thyself against it. Mayhaps."
Hestia De'bayle: "I cannot say. Those who suffered, I do not know them. Miss Delaine however is... well just as much a mystery. Half-Elezen though, just as myself."
Killian De'bayle: "But I can't control them when they're out..."
Rageant Lacordaire: "How precious little of this world within which you dwell can you control?"
Killian De'bayle: "I don't have to control the world. I just want control over myself. And...my space. My things. Like other people can..."
Quarcy Questant: " Hmmm it would have to wait until I meet her then but Im of the opinion that the victim follows a pattern as some voidsent are wont to do when they erm... hunt "
Hestia De'bayle: "It is for the best. She will explain it further tomorrow. Simply be prepared for anything."
Rageant Lacordaire: "The gods gave us courage that we may use it. Find yours. I tell you this not that you will go forth and do it - I tell you so these words may echo in thy mind once you've truly done something for which you cannot forgive thyself. Then you will know the words for the truth that they are. Then you will make the choice in earnest."
Quarcy Questant: " Anything means taking out Stardust again... " He mused. "Well there's a first for anything this turn I suppose.”
Hestia De'bayle: "Stardust?" Hestia questions, peering over toward Killian some.
Quarcy Questant: "A wand. Personally made. I'd like to think she and I have seen more adventures together than even the thickest tomes.”
Killian De'bayle: "I have...I have done something...I couldn't make it stop...I tried, I tried, but I couldn't make them stop...what does that say? About me? That I...chose to do it?"
Quarcy Questant parts his lips as if admitting to an embarrassing fact. " Ah well it's just a tool for thaumaturgy is all "
Rageant Lacordaire: "Each day which you choose not to fight it, you've made your choice thusly. If you let thy rage into thy home to have its way with you, 'tis thy sin to bear."
Killian De'bayle: "Oh..." Killian murmurs quietly. "I...I'm sorry...um, I...I just wanted to apologize, so...I'm going to go home now..."
Rageant Lacordaire: "Very well; I should return to my duties as well. Remember thee of this; thy struggle dwells in thy heart, for this is where good and evil collide. You cannot flee long from what dwells within."
Killian De'bayle: "R-right," Killian mumbles, quickly turning back toward the door. "S-sorry...I guess we'll...um, talk tomorrow." With that, Killian hastily shuffles out of the room.
Hestia De'bayle: "Hm. He was in a hurry."
Rageant Lacordaire: "'Tis time I should depart."
Hestia De'bayle: "I have never seen him end a conversation quite so calmly though. Thank you, Rageant. Take care with the rest of your evening."
Rageant Lacordaire offered a curt nod of affirmation, nothing unfamiliar to Hestia.
Quarcy Questant: "Primordial voidsent dating back from before proper lexicons were used... I think I have an idea."
Hestia De'bayle: "Hm?"
Quarcy Questant: "Well I'd have to know more but..."
Hestia De'bayle: "Hold to that idea, and see if it will broadened tomorrow eve. I am sure regardless of what happens, you will come more knowledgeable than you came in. I had best follow Killian."
Quarcy Questant: "Very well."
Hestia De'bayle: "Rest well, Quarcy. Until then."
Quarcy Questant: "I'll be at the library, and you as well."
I knew something need be done, but how could I allow Killian the honour of being at my side, when I fear for his safety most of all?

Upon our return to the estate, we took in the information we had gathered bit by bit...
Killian De'bayle arrives somewhat late, having changed and patched up the side of his face with bandages.
Quarcy Questant scrubs through the data and takes inventory of everything therein. Their operation paid its weight in tomestones.
Hestia De'bayle entered in alongside Killian, her head bandaged along with some small bruises covering her arms. "Quarcy, have you already inserted the tomestones in? Does this machine accept this sort of data?"
Quarcy Questant: "As far as holographic readers like this one goes, the reading of ‘flat’ information seems to be rather trivial. The two seems to be derived of the same technology after all. Killian I'll have you read the details yourself." Quarcy would tap the settings to read off the data in Eorzean tactile language. "Perfect, it worked."
Hestia De'bayle: "Excellent, that will make the process of breaking down this data far, far simpler," she exhales. "So..." she blinks, looking to Quarcy with a squint. "We can always just... read it aloud to him?"
Quarcy Questant: "Oh... right."
Hestia De'bayle: "Though if the system can produce braille, that might make it easier."
Killian De'bayle: "I can read it," Killian says vacantly, stepping forward. "If it's in Braille."
Hestia De'bayle: "Astrelle might have seen that Eorzean Braille was installed, if it was an option. I asked her to add whatever languages she could. This is a tactile machine."
Killian De'bayle approaches the table. "Where should I touch?"
Quarcy Questant pulled up the information on Áine from before she became a citizen and after. The two sets of information was there, along with another window dedicated to the alleged father. "Start anywhere you'd like from... here."
Hestia De'bayle: "Seems this technology does provide tactile stimuli for those sight-impaired. This way," she leads Killian over toward the station."
Killian De'bayle reaches forward first for the data in the first set, fingers left to right with perhaps surprising speed born of years of practice.
Quarcy Questant watched as a small smile formed over his face. Watching people read gave him some small pride as a librarian so seeing someone read about their life was a private joy he dared not confess.
Hestia De'bayle simply stood there with patience, her eyes reading the displayed image before her with a squint.
Killian De'bayle: "She was captured alone," Killian murmurs after a few lines. "She must not have been with any others from the expedition. She got too close to the castrum in her research, I guess...she must have realized that the Garlean presence would have an effect on the reason why she was there. She fought back...she was injured. A head injury. Slow recovery...she had visitors before Cyrus. Other medics. But he was a regular visitor after he first examined her..."
Quarcy Questant nodded. Even though this was probably not seen.
Hestia De'bayle: "Mmm."
Quarcy Questant: "Its odd having your life read back to you by a garlean case file… well, your parents' anyroad.”
Killian De'bayle: "This must have been a year at least before the battle. Maybe two. She was a prisoner for a long time before she became...a conscript, I guess, or...whatever an 'aan' is. Áine aan Vestoria. She wanted to be a citizen. She was assigned to his team of researchers...eventually became his assistant. Ahh..." Killian's expression falters. "So much for blackmail. Here's the information about her pregnancy. They didn't have maternity doctors there, but Cyrus apparently made sure she and...I...stayed healthy."
Quarcy Questant: " Now now, it was only a ruse to get him to come out "
Killian De'bayle spends a few moments more reading. His brows furrow and he pauses, then re-reads a line. "What? This can't be right."
Hestia De'bayle: "Well if she was accepted as a citizen that would have been different I suppose," she sighs, "perhaps she did it to be with him, to make things easier? Perhaps they really loved one another that much. If there is information on the pregnancy, does it have any information on potential birth defects that might have been present with the infant during the later stages of pregnancy?"
Quarcy Questant's eyes scanned over the braille but could not make out any of it. “Wh- what is it? Wait - you are the only son right?"
Killian De'bayle: "I think I need to find whoever delivered me," Killian murmurs, reading the line a third time.
Hestia De'bayle: "She and I..." Hestia repeats, "it means your mother and you, yes?"
Killian De'bayle: "No," Killian says in reply. "No...it means my sister. But not...Scarlett was older than me, I'm sure..."
Hestia De'bayle: "Your... sister?" Hestia blinks at the image of his mother, "your sister... you have a twin sister?" Her mouth opens agape.
Killian De'bayle: "Garlean technology can identify a child's gender before it's born?" Killian isn't acting nearly as surprised to learn this information as he probably should be. "A sister...I wonder if she died."
Quarcy Questant: "Or walking amongst us. Ah, more answers lead to more questions."
Killian De'bayle: "If she has half the problems I do, it would be easy to recognize her. There's no one else in Gridania like me, I'm sure of it."
Quarcy Questant: "If we approach them about a twin then they can't hide their existence, no?"
Hestia De'bayle: "I know of some who use aether that can do the same?" Hestia murmurs, "we learned of my brothers sex before his birth..." Hestia murmurs. "Though... I suppose I never learned how they did," Hestia shakes her head. "We need speak to someone in Gridania about you. There is bound to be someone there who remembers such an occasion. It is a hard thing to forget."
Killian De'bayle: "It was also a long time ago. Before the Calamity. I'll ask at the Fane for anyone who might know who delivered me."
Hestia De'bayle: "What about the conjurer's guild? The Padjal there? They have long lives, do they not?"
Quarcy Questant: " That they do. But if I may be bold to ask -- which of these concerns weigh heavier on you, a twin or a father."
Hestia De'bayle: "More importantly, did either of them have history of health issues? If not, then truly we do know the answer to why we began searching to begin with."
Killian De'bayle: "Assuming they were directly involved, sure. But most of the Padjal are...well, there's no reason for them to pay attention to a stranger's childbirth." Killian resumes his reading. "Neither," he answers Quarcy. "It says everyone was required to help with the battle, but my mother was...she was six moons pregnant then. She wasn't supposed to go. But...I guess she did. And she disappeared after the battle. They think she died there. Where's the information on Cyrus?"
Hestia De'bayle glances toward Quarcy.
Quarcy Questant drags it down to Killian's finger tips. "Here.”
Killian De'bayle traces his fingers over the translated data, finding the start and reading through that next. A long moment passes before he speaks. "It's like...they couldn't decide what they wanted him to do. Medic, research overseer...in charge of...conditioning? Conditioning conscripts. Finding suitable ones for his team. I guess he found my mother suitable and she joined with him. It doesn't say very much about their relationships...his records...he was a pureblood. He is a pureblood."
Killian De'bayle: "He survived the battle...and the Calamity...but he stayed assigned there instead of going back to the capitol. Why?" Killian murmurs. "There's nothing to suggest he was unhealthy, but...apparently the Battle for Silvertear Skies had adverse effects?"
Hestia De'bayle: "Perhaps he stayed, hoping to find her again. He knew she was pregnant with their children."
Quarcy Questant bit his fingernail. He knew this to be dangerous thinking if it turned out to be anything else than that.
Killian De'bayle: "Why did she leave if she bore his children out of love?"
Hestia De'bayle: "The battle was an intense one. He might have made her leave to get her somewhere safe... and it did not turn out for the best."
Killian De'bayle: "But if he made her leave, then he'd know she didn't die in the battle."
Quarcy Questant: "I can't help but wonder. How do you know your mother spoke fondly of your father.”
Hestia De'bayle: "That is why he is remaining then. Because he believes she may still live. We are working entirely off assumption, but I am one to look at the glass half-full."
Killian De'bayle: "We don't know, Mister Questant. It's a theory. None of this makes sense. The records show she's presumed dead after the battle."
Quarcy Questant: "Hestia it's important not to see it as just one way. There's so much indicating this story be read in another light. We don't know if she stayed out of love. If there is love at all."
Hestia De'bayle sighs. "Right," she murmurs. "Well, after all this time... we at least know that neither of them have a history of illness."
Quarcy Questant: "I - Killian, I'm sorry but even assuming one way - or the other can be considered great leaps thats too big to entertain."
Quarcy Questant: " In times like these you have to steel yourself for the worst but hope for the best "
Killian De'bayle: "There's nothing to apologize for," Killian says blandly. "What we do know is that she turned her back on her home to join Garlemald, whatever the reasons."
Quarcy Questant: "Perhaps."
Hestia De'bayle: "I suppose so," she says quietly.
Killian De'bayle: "She took a Garlean name. She tried to become a citizen."
Hestia De'bayle: "Then it ends here? Your desire to find out more?"
Quarcy Questant stayed his tongue. Even then there was so much fuel for doubt but was it necessary to be so contrarian? “You seek the truth do you not?"
Killian De'bayle: "I don't know. What more is there to find out that doesn't put us at unnecessary risk? Aside from searching for information about my sister, which I doubt will lead us any closer to learning about my mother and father."
Quarcy Questant: "Killian, it would mean putting a face on these reports and well - knowing their face at all."
Killian De'bayle turns his head toward Quarcy with a bland expression.
Quarcy Questant: "Oh - Oh. My apologies."
Hestia De'bayle sighs.
Quarcy Questant deflated like a skewered moogle balloon against the edge of the desk.
Hestia De'bayle: "We will keep this information saved then. Are we done here?"
Killian De'bayle: "There's no pressing need to make any decisions now. There's nothing we can do about that Castrum for a while."
Quarcy Questant: "Mars will keep me updated on the aftermath of our actions but it seems like the hornet's nest is buzzing for a while yet."
Killian De'bayle: "I'm going to go home, then."
Quarcy Questant: "Killian. I meant what I said..."
Killian De'bayle: "I can't see their faces. Knowing them doesn't make a difference to me."
Quarcy Questant: "I really do think people should get the chance to meet their parents."
Killian De'bayle: "Meeting my father is probably more difficult than it's worth. But I'll think on it."
Hestia De'bayle: "Quarcy," Hestia states firmly. "Allow him some time to digest this all. It is a lot to take in."
Quarcy Questant: "Very well then," Quarcy relaxed his pose. The tension in the room seemingly crimping him down.
Hestia De'bayle: "A lot happened tonight. Let us meet again once we have had time to rest, eat... sleep."
I knew I would need to appease Killian. I would simply need to find out how. With all the answers we received, were left with more questions.

The time had come for us to take action. Never in our quest for understanding Killian’s shrouded family background did I ever think this was where we would end up...

We returned to the estate from there, to make sense of our findings.
