Crawford and Shearer had a long-standing rivalry dating back to 1925 when Joan played Norma’s body double in the silent drama Lady of the Night and decided that Norma looked down on her, deeming Crawford “a two-bit dancer”. Joan’s jealousy increased after Shearer married Irving Thalberg (Louis B. Mayer’s right-hand man and MGM’s Vice President in Charge of Production), elevating her to the position of “First Lady of MGM” and prompting Crawford to remark: “What do you expect? She sleeps with the boss!” Bitter that Norma got the pick of plum roles at MGM, Joan also stated: “Norma Shearer got the productions, Greta Garbo supplied the art, and Joan Crawford made the money to pay for both!” Shearer later commented on their well-known animosity, tactfully resorting to passive-aggressive politeness: “I like and admire Joan. And I believe she feels the same way about me. I hope so. I think both of us have been hurt and embarrassed by the persistent stories of our rivalry and hatred. How could I hate Joan? She is so much like me.”
