Description
This is a view towards Lochnagar and Glen Gelder from the Mains of Monaltrie. Lochnagar is a mountain in the Grampians in Scotland on the royal estate of Balmoral. The Gelder Burn flows from Lochnagar to the River Dee. In 1850 Queen Victoria described Lochnagar as ‘still the jewel of all the mountains here’.

Description
This is a view at the head of the Loch in the . Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had gone on an expedition to Loch Avon in 1861, a few months before the death of the Prince. She recorded it in her Journal: ‘We … looked down upon Loch Avon. It was very cold and windy … we sat down behind a large stone a little above the loch (unfortunately we could not go to the extreme end, where the water rushes in to it)’.
