Henrik's head tilted as he examined the doorway towards the exit. While he never made a move to leave or pass his fingers through the barrier, he knew it was there. He was studying the magic that radiated off of it.
"He can sense the darker magic that was used." Y/N said as she looked over at Elijah, who had been standing next to her. They both had been watching their son as he took in the compound. When he came up to the barrier, he had been drawn to it.
It had taken a few days for Y/N and Freya to get up the needed protection that the compound required. While most of it had been done with natural magic, Y/N decided one more was needed, tapping into her darker side. Elijah had been sure to keep Henrik away while she had.
While Y/N had gained control over her darker side several years ago, it would influence Henrik if he had been nearby. With his birthday only being a day away now, they wouldn't risk exposing him to the dark magic as it was being used. But watching as her son was interested in the magic that radiated, she knew her son was sensitive to it.
A thought passed Elijah's mind causing him to sigh. "He would make it through the Awakening."
Y/N nodded. "He's got your mother's magic along with mine and my bloodline. He's the perfect candidate for it." Worry radiated through her at that thought. As she looked down at her wrist, her eyes landed on the redness that now surrounded the mark. "By now, they should have been here."
Elijah placed his hand on her shoulder. "We'll make it through this. There is enough protection that surrounds this place, we won't miss when they show. "
Just as Elijah promised, his family did everything they could to ensure that Henrik would be safe. While Y/N and Freya placed up the protection spells, Klaus ensured that the vampires with in the city kept an eye out. Rebekah joined the vampires from time to time, guarding the compound. Kol had even come back to New Orleans with Davina by his side, ready for anything.
Klaus had sent word to Hope to return home when she could. Unfortunately, she wouldn't be able to get back until the morning of Henrik's birthday. After the initial shock of learning she had a cousin, she looked forward to meeting Henrik.
"What if we missed something?" Y/N asked, trying to keep her voice calm. She didn't need Henrik picking up on her worry.
"We didn't," Elijah promised. "There is no one coming in here without us knowing."
Y/N nodded her head. She knew that with there only being a few hours before things hit the fan. She knew there would be no sleeping for her tonight. She knew that she would be up, making sure that Henrik was safe.
"Who's ready for today's lesson?" Freya's voice filled the courtyard causing Henrik to quickly turn away from the barrier.
"I am!" He said, running over to his aunt.
The adults in the room laughed at his excitement. Even if Henrik knew there was something to be worried about, he still looked forward to his lessons with Freya. It gave Y/N hope that this would go over without a fight.
But when were things ever that simple?
_____
Elijah laid Henrik down on the bed of Y/N's room. Y/N stood by the door and watched as he did so. Seeing Henrik with Elijah always brought a smile to her face. It made the trouble they possibly faced worth it.
While there was a mixed feeling of being back in the compound, moments like this made it easier to take. This hadn't been a room Y/N was familiar with. She could clearly remember every detail of the one down the hall without ever stepping into it since her return. But that was no longer her safe space, her home that she lived in for years.
"His lessons wore him out." Elijah spoke softly as he covered Henrik with a blanket. His words had caused Y/N to leave her thoughts and move into the present.
"If it wasn't for that last spell, I think he would have kept going." She said with a smile. She watched as her son curled up into the blanket as he usually did once he was placed into the bed.
"He's getting better at controlling it." He said as he looked over at Y/N. "I only wish I could help in training him."
She gave him a small smile before moving her spot and walking over to him. "You are doing everything for him without the help of magic. You're giving him a safe place to stay. Since we've been back, you have exceeded my expectations."
Elijah sighed as he ran his knuckles over her cheek. "I apologize for setting the standards lower with the way we parted."
Y/N actually leaned into his touch. She had missed that feeling. "I only did because I was hurt. And when the letters returned," She shook her head and took a step back. "I just no longer knew what to expect when I came back out here. But you've been great with him. I need you to know that."
Elijah dropped his hand down back to his side the moment she moved away from him. "I would do anything for him." He said with a small smile pulling at his lips. "Even for you."
Y/N tilted her head at the words. "We both just need to worry about him."
Elijah shook his head at that. "I worry about you as well. Especially with the thoughts that have gone through your head."
Y/N bit the inside of her cheek as she looked over at Henrik. "Can we not talk about that here?"
Elijah nodded his head and pulled Y/N out into the hallway. While he understood that she didn't want Henrik to overhear them, they would have this conversation. Once they were outside of the room, Elijah sighed as he ran his hand along his chin.
"Do you really think giving yourself back to your family would stop them from coming after him?" He asked as he looked over at Y/N.
Y/N bit on her bottom lip for a moment and shook her head. "Not until after he turns six. But doing it will help buy us time to get him away from here."
"You understand it wouldn't be us that would get that extra time." He said, looking into her Y/E/C eyes. "You wouldn't be there afterward. Henrik would lose you to the darkness that would consume you. " Elijah wanted to stop himself from saying anything else. But he couldn't just let Y/N believe this was a backup plan. "I would lose you."
Her eyes widened slightly at his words. She hadn't been expecting them. Part of her wanted to believe them. It tried to accept that just maybe, that his past mistakes didn't change anything. But the other part of her knew better. And perhaps it was the darkness that been dormant in her for so long that thought the words, but she couldn't stop them. "You lost me way before this."
She hadn't missed the way his face fell or the way he looked elsewhere. It was cruel for her to have said it, but the words had been the truth. Some things couldn't be mended so easily. The heartbreak that followed left a lasting impression.
Elijah nodded his head as he looked anywhere but in her direction. "I understand. Though I do hope my words on Henrik remind you that this isn't the way to go about this."
"We both would do anything to ensure his safety. I'm not about to go over there and hand my offer over the moment Lucia shows up." She wanted to make it clear that while this plan was on the table, it would be a last resort. "But if all other options fail, and Henrik somehow finds himself in a circle, I won't hesitate. Just like you wouldn't hesitate to take a life if someone harmed him."
They both knew Elijah would do just that. It wasn't unknown that Elijah would kill the person responsible for harming his family in any way. The circumstance was different now; this was his son they were talking about. Elijah would do anything to protect his son. Even more then he had done with his siblings or even his niece.
He understood the lengths that Y/N was willing to go to. But he hoped that it would never come to that. "Let's hope neither of us will need to."
_____
Y/N's foot tapped against the floor while she sat down across from Freya. Her anxiety was getting the best of her. With every passing hour, there was still no sign of her family anywhere. Y/N knew that the way her wrist was starting to welt around the mark that there were only a few hours before Midnight.
Based on what Y/N knew and remembered, there were only two more steps to the mark. After the edges of the symbol began to welt, it would soon start to warm up. Slowly after, a black circle would form around it. The closer you were to dark magic, the darker the inside of the ring would be.
For a person such as Lucia, there would be nothing but a dark circle on her wrist. As for Y/N, she knew that she would still be able to see the wings and skull that currently occupied her wrist. In Henrik's case, his mark would just have a black ring around it.
"If your foot taps any louder I'm going to have to kill you." Freya said, glancing up from her grimoire.
Y/N's foot stopped. "I'm sorry. " She apologized as she shook her head. "This waiting is driving me insane. They should have been attempting to come in at this point. My family wouldn't miss the opportunity to meet the family member that would give them more power."
Putting down the grimoire, Freya sighed. "My Aunt Daliah used a tactic similar to this. When someone knew she was coming, they'd grow anxious. Just as you are now. And once they had become tired of waiting, they'd go in search of her. That was when she attacked."
A huff passed Y/N's lips as she slumped into the seat. "That's one hell of a tactic. Cause I'd like to run out myself and look for what family is lurking in the shadows."
Freya chuckled. "It's a good thing Elijah and Klaus are currently on the balcony keeping an eye on those shadows."
Y/N was grateful that the Mikaelson siblings were willing to help Elijah protect Henrik as they had been. While she had seen them do it time and time again, it was different when her son currently had his life on the line. All the other times she had witnessed it, she had been the one helping in some way. Not sitting around, feeling helpless.
"There seems to be no sign of anyone." Elijah's voice filled the air moments later.
"I'm surprised you were the one to come down first." Y/N said, looking over at Elijah. "I thought for sure we were going to have to pry you away from the balcony."
"I've only come down for a moment." Elijah said with a nod. "I wanted to check in on you and Henrik."
Y/N gave him a small smile. "Henrik is still sleeping and I'm trying not to go crazy waiting for them to show up. "
"I assure you, no one will get in without us knowing." He looked over at Freya. "I assume you've been helping to keep her calm?"
Freya huffed. "We both know keeping Y/N calm is a challenge in it's own."
Y/N laughed. "At least I'm keeping you entertained."
Freya rolled her eyes before looking back towards her brother. "How is our early warning system holding up?"
There was hesitance in Elijah at the question. After a moment, he answered. "Given the circumstances it's been oddly quiet with it."
Y/N groaned. "How is that supposed to make me feel better?"
Elijah chuckled. "I don't believe it is." He looked around the compound for a moment before looking at Y/N and giving her a smile. "I'll be back soon to check in on you again." A second later, he was gone.
"At least you know he still cares." Freya said, looking over at Y/N.
Y/N nodded. "He's been great with Henrik. He keeps mentioning that he's there for me, but I can't seem to get past the hurt."
Freya sighed. "What happened that night, I wish never happened."
Y/N looked down at her hands. "Sometimes, I wish the same. If I-"She stopped herself. "If he hadn't gone out to the bayou, we would have been fine. Henrik would have grown up here. Loved and protected and not on the run." She shook her head.
"We can't change what happened," Freya said as she reached over and placed her hand on Y/N's arm. "but you can look forward to building your son a future here where his parents grew up. Where they fell in love." She added with grin pulling at her lips.
"He's loved that story from the moment I first told him." Y/N's lips tugged at the corners. "He's been looking forward to seeing this place and he wasn't disappointed. But I'm not sure if anything is going to change between the two of us."
"You never know, stranger things have happened between the Mikaelsons." Freya said with a shrug.
"Someone entered the boundaries." Elijah's voice filled the air as he walked in with Klaus by his side. "Your warning system alerted us fairly quickly."
"Did either of you step out with in the last few minutes?" Klaus asked, looking between the two women.
Y/N and Freya looked over at each other with a confused look on their face. "Did someone get in during the shift change?" Y/N asked.
A moment later, Y/N felt the warmth of the necklace around her neck. Panic began to fill her as she jumped out of her seat and made her way towards the stairs.
"Y/N, what is it?" Elijah asked, watching her. He hadn't missed the look on her face.
Y/N didn't say anything but ran up the stairs as quickly as she could. All she knew was that she needed to get to Henrik. She needed to make sure that he was still there in the bed. But the way her necklace was giving off the warmth, she knew something was wrong.
The moment she reached the door and pushed it open, her eyes scanned the room for any threat that might be in there. But the moment her eyes landed on the bed, she knew there was no longer a threat inside the compound.
She took a shaky step towards the bed, her eyes hoping they were playing tricks on her. "Rik?" She said loud enough, hoping that if her son was still in the room, he'd answer.
Reaching the bed, she pulled the crumpled sheets away, before looking under the bed. Her heart picked up as she ran to the closet and opened it. A sob passed her lips as she found Henrik's safe place empty. He was supposed to go there if a threat ever entered the compound.
"Elijah!" She yelled. Even though he probably would have been able to hear if she had just said his name, the fear coursed through her was enough to justify her yell.
Henrik was gone. And the person responsible for his disappearance was here moments before. There were two things she could do at that moment. A quick spell would be able to tell her who had been in the room. Lifting her hands slightly, the words left her lips.
When Elijah found Y/N, he could see that she was in the middle of a spell. What he hadn't been expecting was how her eyes changed at that moment. They had gone from her Y/E/C shade to black instantly. The necklace around her neck began to give off a glow as she continued the spell.
"Y/N?" He asked hesitantly as he took a few steps closer to her.
Y/N's head tilted as she completed the spell. Her eyes landing on Elijah. They never once shifted back to the color he had enjoyed seeing in her eyes. He watched as dark black veins began to form on her face and neck.
"Hayley Marshall had a witch working with her to put a glamour spell on her." There was a small smirk pulling at her lips. "Oh I'm going to enjoy killing the bitch."
