Eugène Murer (Hyacinthe-Eugène Meunier, 1841–1906), oil on canvas (1877) Auguste Renoir (French, 1841–1919) painted this portrait of Eugène Murer (French, 1841–1906), a celebrated pastry cook and devoted collector of Impressionist works. Murer was a close friend to many artists and eventually owned over 100 paintings, including 15 by Renoir himself.

The work exemplifies the Impressionist movement through its use of soft, feathered brushstrokes and a vibrant palette to capture the interplay of light and character. It has been suggested that Murer’s pose and gaze in this work served as a model for Van Gogh’s famous portrait of another great Impressionist collector, Dr. Paul-Ferdinand Gachet, Murer’s neighbor in Auvers. Loc. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Dim. 47 cm H x 39.4 cm W (18 1/2 x 15 1/2 in.).
