Title: The Bodmer Oak, Fontainebleau Forest Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926) Date: 1865 Genre: landscape Movement: Impressionism Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 96.2 cm (37. 8 in) high x 129.2 cm (50.8 in) wide Location: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, NY, USA
The Bodmer Oak, named after Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (who exhibited a painting of it at the 1850 Paris Salon), was a popular subject among artists of the later 19th century. Monet painted this work in autumn 1865, at the close of a long visit to the Fontainebleau Forest, and took great pains to depict the contrast between the green leaves still on the surrounding trees and the carpet of orange at the foot of the oak.
