Preface

Augustine Silvera was a Radio broadcaster born sometime in the early 20th century, Her diary and broadcasts remain one of the most insightful pieces of Postmodern pieces of literature found in India.

She lived a long life, dissapearing sometime after the 1980s, She was presumed to be dead as she suffered from Alzheimer's in her later years.

Her body was never found; Neither was her Diary, presumed lost along with her.

Broadcast 17 By Augustine Silvera

17th December 1927.

Oh this is good ladies, gentlemen... oh this is very incredibly good.

Really what about it you ask?

Oh this, this is the Seventeenth Broadcast by Yours Truly, Augustine Silvera.

Now you may beasking, Augustine, what's so special about today's Broadcast, why not 15, or any other nice looking number to celebrate with?

and... You'll be completely correct. 15, and 20, and 25,

each one of them is a milestone, but you see, I started this little broadcast of mine to send messages to a certain someone, and their birthday, is on the seventeenth. so I'm up here in my little cottage, celebrating this little milestone, oh and to my beloved, Happy Birthday My dear, I hope the day goes well for you.

But oh well, in other news, Tensions rise between The British and China, furthering our communal anxiety towards our long term well-being.

The Inflation goes up to an all time high as we take the shiny road towards a global recession.

And our dear Mahatma visits Ceylon. I wish for his safe return to India soon.

A listener of the broadcast and a dear friend of mine asked me to talk on the subject of war.

They asked me one day over some chai, Hey Auggie, Do you think there'll be another World War and I said Of course. It is a defining trait of Humanity, Historically in times of peace the people pray for there to be no more war and every time their wishes are denied by the gods.

War is imminent I said, as Imminent as rain in this godforsaken weather. I swear it sees more swings than my mood, But for anyone listening who may be as in love with the rain as i am, know that my knees tell me it's gonna rain soon But that's all we have for today folks.

[The recording ends here however a bit of background instrumentals continued playing which probably meant that the song continued on.

On further investigation no other recording of the song was found however I found multiple newspapers from the same year talking about the Hit Song, Cupid's Heart by The Barley Brothers.]

Broadcast 56

15 November 1930

Good Morning Folks,

Today isn't a bad day people, it's not a bad day at all. It's quite a beautiful day actually here in Dehradun, well to be fair every day is a beautiful day in Dehradun. it's beautiful country really, gorgeous skies, gorgeous people, gorgeous everything.

It's remained the most beautiful places I have visited on this road trip so far, Jodhpur coming to a close second considering the people who live there.

For an update on the trip, we'd be heading up to Badrinath and further up to Mana Village near the border.

The sunrise today was beautiful folks, shades of red, pink, oranges and yellows pranced in the sky as the sun was lifted up by a great wizard standing on top of a mountain. It may seem silly but it really seems that way when you stand here atop these mountains that have been standing here for centuries. It reminds you of your own worthlessness, your own inconsequentiality.

It reeks of nihilism really considering yourself to be worthless but if you think about it doesn't it guarantee your freedom, Standing here among giants I'm reminded of how petty our squabbles really are, how time often flies through folks who don't feel it pass by, being so clogged up in their prejudices that they forget to praise the beauty of everything surrounding your tiny existence. It guarantees that you, dear listener, are free to do as you please and that humanity, forever tormented by its own prejudices will pull you down. I grant you freedom today dear listeners, go see the outdoors away from your little place you call home, and be changed forever.

it's not always a bad thing you see, change. it's often quite terrifying to change anything about anything. I'd know seeing as how I watched everything pass by me, changing me and everything around me. Everything I knew Is now gone.

I used to be someone else entirely, walking a different path than I do now. I grew up in a place with a lot of women, no no, don't change the frequency yet gents, It's just that my father fought in the war, and he died there, along with my grandfather, so i really just grew up with my two matriarchs. I apologize for the depressing tone people, Moving on to better topics,

Magnus Silvera #1

Dear Diary, I fucked up.

Now one may inquire as to the nature of my fuckup, and they would be absolutely correct in doing so.

I recently found in my university's archives the tape broadcasts of Augustine Silvera, a 20th century radio broadcaster who was based in India and it has consumed my life.

Now, you may ask, How so? Wellllllll it's complicated. it's obsession. who am I kidding it's obsession. I have been obsessed with the search for this woman.

Who is Augustine Silvera you may ask? Well as far as I know, a distant ancestor of mine, Along with being one of the most mysterious people to air on radio.

How? She remains that for several reasons

One, As far as I can tell, we have no primary sources regarding her life before she turned 25. She herself acknowledges this fact in one of her broadcasts. Quoting Broadcast 78, "I don't think anything on my life exists before I turned 25, No written records, no photos, Nothing."

Two, in 1948, We have her last broadcast transmitted across India after which they abruptly end, and as far as I can tell, she stopped existing after this Broadcast.

And three, She's Colorful. While listening to the broadcast you can tell why it was so popular, because of her personality. The Persona of Augustine Remains one of the most charming, enchanting, and lovely things that I have ever heard on any form of media. She belongs up there along with the greats of Radio.

And that's all we know of her. Several missing persons reports were filed for her, most of these reports were lost during the partition but the ones that remain are in the Dehradun University Archive.

Not many pictures exist of her and those that do exist differ so much in their content that it's hard to tell whether it's truly her.

It truly was a great loss when she ended her broadcasts, rippling waves across all other radio stations scrambling to fill in the vacuum left by her enormous presence.

Going to sleep that I desperately deserved and had earned today, I decided to investigate the dissapearence of my great grandmother, and my father.
