“But my bones will rest easy next to your bones.” Line that changed the whole book for me. In a single moment these characters who confounded and frustrated me became holy in my heart. Two sad old gods whose greatest wish is to die in obscurity together, who know they can never be redeemed, so they dream instead of a better world without them in it. Oh my loves. Ten thousand years is a long time to carry so much grief.
[the locked tomb. augustine the first encounters an old friend in the stoma. 2.7k.]
““i thought you were dead,” augustine said, not quite accusatorially.
“reports of my death,” ulysses said, with a crooked grin, “have been greatly exaggerated.””
or: augustine the first encounters an old friend in the stoma.
anyway i've been annoying my friends about ulysses since i read the books and i thought it was high time i finally finished a fic about him. because i need to build a brand that i'm annoying about ulysses before he shows up in alecto and everyone thinks he's cool (i just don't think it's a coincidence that john canonically doesn't know what's happening in the stoma and he's named after classic lit's most famous ‘everyone thought was dead for twenty years but he's actually alive surprise!’ guy. but i digress). anyway i hope everyone else loves my take on god's favorite frat boy as much as i do <3
read ‘desperate times call for desperate pleasures.’ here on ao3!
So I was thinking, about the Lyctors and their Sainthood titles. And while yes, we know they were named for their cavs, I think they were also named for the parts of them that their cavs brought out.
For Mercymorne, there was only one person who ever truly brought her Joy. G1deon had a very certain person who brought out in him a sense of Duty. Augustine’s brother taught him Patience, etc. They were named for the parts of themselves brought to light by their cavs.
Even Ianthe, who only through Babs’ sacrifice and becoming a lyctor, could she finally get the attention and individual notoriety, the Awe, she’d been so deeply desiring. And it’s a whole different conversation if you want to argue that her true cav is her sister.
And thus I present to you Harrowhark the First, the Saint of Comedy, because there was only one person who could truly make Harrow smile.
my section for augustine (and mercymorn) are pretty brief, since for the others I was taking down any information that hinted at their personality, but we know them! so i didn't have to do that! nonetheless, here are all my notes on what seemed like relevant information about augustine during my reread:
(you can find links to the other posts in this project here!)
AUGUSTINE
titles:
First saint to ascend, first gen, founded the fifth, saint of patience (from BOE) source piotra
name origin and meaning (from wikipedia lol)
notes:
Spirit magic generalist (htn. pg. 173)
John says that Cristabel's name would upset Augustine (htn. pg. 177)
Augustine doesn't mind talking about Cristabel though, and says: "A total delight. Effervescent. Kind to animals and children. A master of the sword. Did not have the intellect you'd ordinarily find in a sandwich or an orange, and was a sickening twerp into the bargain. The Eighth House will never see her like again." (htn. pg. 177)
G1deon has caused Augustine a lot of trouble in the last 40 years (htn. pg. 268)
Augustine developed his smoking habit to impress Pyrrha (htn. pg. 275)
Extremely proficient in river based magic. Not as proficient as Cassiopiea, but enough that John thinks he could bring an RB’s brain and body into the river (htn. pg. 337)
John says that G1deon doesn’t talk about her (alecto), but Augustine and Mercy still feel guilty about what happened (htn. pg. 345)
Gideon & Pyrrha liked Alecto despite the fact that the other lyctors (at least Mercy and Augustine) didn't (htn. pg. 479)
"you picked the wrong man to enter a suicide pact with. I hate 'em. Cristabel might have undone all my good work with Alfred, but here comes the reckoning." - Augustine (htn. pg. 487)
was brought on John's team because he was a "glycerol-6 genius" (ntn. pg. 13)
“I remember A- and M-... they were alive… we all hid behind a kitchen table. I remember their hands in my hands… I remember A- telling me something, and M- saying, We’re together. We’ll go together. But they found us, they were already there. They shot A- right in front of us… hauled me out… M- said, Take John alive. He’s worth more to you alive. And they shot her.” (ntn. pg. 406)
