Discovered in a sunken part of ancient Alexandria, a stone sphinx is composed of a lion's body and the face of what is probably Cleopatra's father, Ptolemy XII. The pharaoh wears a customary royal headdress with a cobra at the brow. Such figures represented the ruler's divine power and were placed outside important buildings.
