The Aunty Jack Show - Farewell Aunty Jack
If you grew up in Australia in the ‘70s, then you know the Aunty Jack Show, which was a comedy sketch show on the ABC. Aunty Jack was a transvestite who wore a dress like a Victorian little old lady with football boots and socks, and a gold boxing glove. She rode a motorbike, and threatened to ‘rip your bloody arms off!’ in her deep gravelly voice if anyone displeased her - which was often. My brother used to threaten this too, but it didn’t really have the same effect since he was about five years old at the time.
Riding in the sidecar and singing the closing theme song was Thin Arthur, played by Rory O’Donoghue (that’s him in the tights). The song was released as a picture single, and I still have my copy of it. It spent several weeks at number 1 in 1974.
Rory O’Donoghue died last week. Farewell, Rory.

Here’s a precursor to Australian absurdist pantomime performer Grahame Bond (of “Aunty Jack” fame), from A Series of Original Portraits and Caricature Etchings by John Kay, 1877.
