Aurora Rosebriar never really understood why she had been sent away years ago. Only that her parents, Stefan and Leah Rosebriar had had an... unpleasant incident. They had decided it would be safer for their only child to spend some time away from London, in the countryside near Berkshire with her aunts.
Her ‘aunts’ of course, weren’t exactly blood relations. Very old and dear friends of her mother’s, rather. But Aurora loved the dears nonetheless. In fact, she rather loved the change of scenery. The countryside proved so much nicer than the city, there was so much greenery, so much space for a young girl to run about in. She had lived very happily in this way for years. At least, until the day she received word from her parents...
“They say, as I am to debut next season, they shall be preparing for my return to London very soon.” Aurora frowned as she recounted the news to her friend. Together, the pair were pulling weeds from a carrot garden. “I don’t know if I want to return to London,” Aurora sighed. “I love it here in Berkshire.”
Her friend made a thoughtful ‘hmm’ sound as he yanked out a weed by its roots. George Geef was a simple young man, originally from the Americas. He had come to England years before, looking to make a life for himself. And he had! Nothing much, really, just a humble farm where he grew vegetables, kept some chickens and a cow. But it was more than enough for him. Like Aurora, he had found happiness here in the countryside.
But unlike George, Aurora came from money. From a fine family in London, with a fine house and servants and all of that. “I’m sure you’ll love London once you get there and get used to it again,” he offered. “You’ll have a nice big house, fancy dresses, you’ll get ta go to them fancy parties...”
“I would rather help you weed your garden,” Aurora mused with a smile. Her aunts never did like it when she went out helping the locals with their work, farming and mending and tending animals and looking after children. But she loved to do it! She loved to keep busy, to enjoy the simple life. Good old George Geef, he had been the one to least treat her like some fragile thing, like some outsider that was too good for their simple company. That was why she liked him best.
“Aw, I appreciate that,” George told her. “But ya can’t spend your whole life weeding gardens and carrying buckets.”
“You seem happy to do so.”
“...Well.” George stopped, brushing the dirt off his hands as he thought. “Well that ain’t all I do. I got my readin’, I got my hobbies. Folks should have lots of things to spend their days on, right? Maybe you could enjoy them parties and fancy dresses and still weed a garden now and then.”
Aurora said nothing, mulling this answer over in her mind. Could he be right? Oh, she hoped so... She hoped she could have it all. The garden, the dresses... Maybe someone nice to share it all with...
