omnics :)
Aurora's Birth in Overwatch Genesis - Part One: Dawn
My mental image for Aurora's ascension was always something kind of like the "Apotheosis" sequence in Thatgamecompany's Journey. It was always something that kind of happened to her... on its own, if that makes sense? But instead it's more like "Liao built a big machine that basically allowed Aurora to break Anubis's grip on all the omnics even if it meant killing her." I know Zenyatta said she sacrificed herself, but I had no idea humans were involved and also... accommodating for that???
Which again like... is very "Robot Jesus" for the Shambali having such eastern religious aesthetics.
But also yooooooo Iris sighting!!!!
Mina Liao in a suit is the best possible thing they could’ve given us
DAWN - the first Overwatch Genesis Anime short, was a lovely trip down memory lane lore wise, as well as doing some excellent world building and fleshing out of Mina Liao and Aurora! Get into the lore here :)
So that Aurora reveal then
I’ve been writing Bastion as having some background knowledge and patterns to their reactions in common with humans and humanoid omnics even when a combat bot wouldn’t need to be designed that way, and my reasoning for that was that Bastion units’ processors and the code that runs on them probably weren’t designed completely from scratch but rather based on earlier, more generic models of omnic. No need to reinvent the wheel when iterative design is an option, after all. Some things were added, removed, or reworked for the combat models to make them more effective, but there’s a limit to how much you can reengineer an existing codebase before you break it and have to roll back or start over, so they all derive their basic kernel of consciousness from the original generic worker-omnics.
The recent reveal that all modern, sapient omnics literally have a single common ancestor -- however that works in practical terms -- does a lot to further that headcanon!
