Beyond those, the deepest impression of Iceland for people absolutely is Northern lights, which is also called as Aurora.
I marvel at its beauty and I am really curious about its causes. However, I am not very good at physical knowledge. Therefore, I googled it to find some explanation.
The aurora is caused by charged particles from the solar wind hitting atoms in the Earth's upper atmosphere. The Sun emits a stream of electrons and protons called the solar wind. These particles interact with the Earth's magnetic field and are funneled towards the magnetic poles, which is why aurora are visible at high latitudes. The different colors in the aurora come from different atoms being excited. Green aurora come from the excitation of oxygen. Red and blue aurora come from the excitation and ionization of nitrogen atoms. (Spitler, 2019) It sounds interesting.
The official Aurora season in Iceland is from October till March, but like with so many other things that have to do with Icelandic nature, it's not something you can say with any certainty. The ideal conditions to see them are when it's cold and dark outside and the Aurora activity is high. I am not sure whether I could see the Aurora this time. Even though I have seen it twice-one was the last time I came to Iceland and one was when I traveled to Sweden at last Christmas holidays, I still feel excited about it and can’t wait to see it. I hope I have a good luck this time as well.
By the way, I download an Aurora forecast app on my phone named “My aurora forecast”. It could show the KP index (geomagnetic index), the chance of seeing northern light in your current location now, the aurora map, best location, viewing probability, cloud coverage tonight and a series of parameters. It really is a nice app that I want to recommend because I used it to chase aurora last time when I came to Iceland and when I traveled to Sweden and it was worked. It predicts the third night of this trip is a good night to chase the aurora. I will confirm it again at that day before third night to making my detailed plan.
