I want Australian slang lessons with Lizzy!
Righto, FUCK, I've been waiting my entire life on Tumblr for this moment. Warning: I’m gonna swear, you asked about Australians talking, this is authentic.
Also, don’t say Australian, it’s Aussie, we cut back as many unnecessary letters as we can because we have a grand total of 1 brain cell in the countri\y and it goes to the scariest dingo that week.
First of all, I have never in my entire fucking life heard any Australian say “g’day mate” unless we’re making fun of Americans. Some people say mate (I’ll get there later), some people say g’day, but never together unless it’s ironic.
Second of all, the actual slang.
Right, so you have “mate” which can refer to a person (”Hey mate, long time no see, how are you?”) or to a group of your friends (”We were hanging out with my mates from school,”). If you’re at a bar and someone might be getting angry at you and calls you “mate” it’s usually a sign they wanna fight.
There’s the stereotypical bloke (men) and sheila (women) but I don’t think they really get used much anymore unless you’re more in the top end of Australia.
You know pickup trucks? Here we call them “utes” and they’re typically accompanied by a man who exclusively wears tank tops, board shorts (swimming trunk type things) and thongs (flip flops).
When you go camping you take your swag (sleeping bag). This person then becomes a swagman (disclaimer: literally fucking nobody uses this except for in Waltzing Mathilda). You may also decide to take food camping, which you’d take in your tucker bag (tucker = food, tucker bag is a bag you keep food in).
We don’t go to the mall, we go to the shops. Because there are shops. And when you’re there, you park your car in the car park (parking lot).
AND DID I MENTION HOW MANY THINGS “PISS” CAN BE USED TO DESCRIBE???
Alcohol? Piss. Someone’s drunk? They’re pissed. Someone’s mad? They’re pissed (alternatively: pissed off). You’re making fun of someone? You’re taking the piss out of them (for child-friendly version, see: taking the mickey out of them). It’s raining moderately to severely? No, no, my child, it’s pissing down (or bucketing down, for the kids).
On the topic of kids, we sometimes call toddlers ankle-biters, because they’re little and crawl around near your feet, and they’re usually teething and biting. Anklebiter can refer to any kid from the ages of 6 months to 3 years and eleven months, but if you call them that after they turn 4 it’s weird and you’re taking the mickey out of them for being short.
And fuck, if we’re talking about kids, then they might have been made the same night you gave your bloke a jobbie, which, yes, is what we call blow jobs and, yes, is the least attractive word I’ve ever heard for it in my life.
There’s probably more I’m forgetting, but these are the most common ones. Welcome to the language.
