I found out something about a bird: the hooded warbler is not usually a species that builds nests, but sometimes when two of them have a same-sex pair bond, where they can't lay their own eggs, they build a nest that attracts brood-parasitic species to lay their eggs their and then raise those eggs. Cowbirds were specifically mentioned in what I was reading. I feel like this could be relevant to your bird setting if I can figure out a way to make it into an ask, so I'll try to do that.
