Hey, thanks for asking – sorry about the delay. This has been an odd, eventful day, and this is the first I've heard about it.

In the past, I've sometimes gone to the grocery store with my mom to get food, so there's that.

How would Belmarniss feel about the prospect of Hagan becoming un-Cursed, given that current!him doesn’t want to? Would she consider it a good thing or like further mind control?

She is open to arguments to the effect that it would be further mind control, but given that keeping it also involves a cursed helmet being stuck on his head all the time (in this version), it’s a little hard to argue it.  Also he’s less pleasant, happy, value-aligned, and personally recognizable with it on, which can kinda be a tiebreaker.  Also in the Korva thread it seems like he acknowledges a wifely interest in setting him to rights once the country is squared away.  Belmarniss isn’t indifferent to getting the country squared away so it wouldn’t come up immediately.

I don’t mind the over-generality very much. People do sometimes say “if I were orange I’d be a doctor”; it’s a bit silly but unless you actually plan on swapping via Miolee it doesn't matter much if your thoughts are vague. My objection when somebody says they'd be a small business owner if purple is “I’ll believe you if you *already are* a small business owner”. Small businesses exist in any caste; why would you think you’d own one only if you were purple?

To be fair, the small business model is more common in purple industries.  You can start smaller if you sell raspberry colas from a cart or just show up at people’s houses on foot with a roller bag of cleaning supplies, and then gradually expand to hire your cousin for a few hours a week, versus if you need medical equipment and a way to sterilize it, or if you need twenty dance students to break even on the cost of renting a practice space.  I needed a loan to start out, since I have an entire café, and my case is probably comparable to someone who gets a loan to open a daycare in the same amount of square footage, but not everyone goes that route.  And if you work alone or with one collaborator, like some indie art greens, you don’t tend to call that “small business ownership”, even though it’s not that much different structurally from selling wooden spoons online.

I feel like you shouldn’t have been alone in a foreign city without speaking the language, but also you obviously shouldn’t have had to figure out all the dangers of that when you were three. That sounds like a horrible experience, and I’m sorry it happened to you. Just so you know, though, lost red children almost never get outside their district, so “the caste where lost children get beaten to death” isn’t that accurate. Which is good, because you’re right that they don’t deserve it.

I had my pocket everything with me, I could’ve leaned on translator software for any nonviolent interaction I needed to have. It genuinely didn’t even occur to me that anything like what happened might possibly happen!

It’s so characters can attempt to entertain the thought of shipping them, but we’re not sure if it’ll actually happen.  Sometimes we are just wrong about ships.

I understand that you don't want to read LotR, but am I correct that *just aesthetically* you like a lot of Tolkein names? And there are even more obvious problems with this one, but would Iluvatar work aesthetically?

Yes, just aesthetically some (not all) Tolkien names are about right.  Iluvatar isn’t fabulous but it’s all right.  Eru’s actually a bit better.
