I’ve got a question for you, but first some background:

In California we have a similar fire situation as you do in that we refused to let the natives protect the land and now it burns for months every year. In CA we don’t have enough fire fighters because we can’t afford to pay them. You see we have to make sure the paramilitary murder squads have plenty of money to operate but thats a different issues\. Because of this we just use our prisoners to fight fires since their lives are clearly disposable. We don’t let them become fire fighters after they serve their sentences either though, even though majority of these offenders are nonviolent. 

My question is if Australians use prisoners to fight wild fires as well?

the impact of the bushfires really hit me today, going to the beach with my nephew and my dad. there were piles and piles and piles of ash washed up on the beach, with loads more washing up in the waves rolling up onto the sand. it’s just astounding how much there was, and how many people were remarking “oh my god, look at that all that bloody ash! it’s unbelievable it’s from the bushfires!” it breaks my heart to know that this ash was all previously some bush wildlife’s home hundreds, if not thousands of kilometres away. there’s obvs some other sea debry washed up as well, like seaweed etc. but you get my point. there was so many piles and streaks of ash on the beach.
