“Dany going mad could have been good if they had just developed it more”
Sorry but no. having a female character in a position of power (especially one in a traditionally male role/position) go mad or become corrupt with power or whatever, isnt new or subversive or unique. It’s been done a million times and is a trope in its own right. One that very commonly relies on deeply misogynistic undertones (and in GoT’s case extremely troubling stereotypes of mental illness as well) Not to mention GoT already has a villain queen that looses her shit, making it redundant as well as lazy.
Daenerys went from genre defying iconic female character that inspired millions of women to (and excuse my language) another crazy bitch that needs to be put down by her male counterpart. It doesn’t matter if they took 5 seasons to write her “descent”, just like they could have spent 5 seasons writing Jaime undoing all of his character growth and running back to Cersei. it would have still been trash even if it made sense.
For the record, I’m not saying descent into villainy is always a bad story arc, it can be well crafted, throught provoking and even novel but for some characters it just won’t fit. Tyrion would have been a better fit (there was actual ground work there) or hell even Jon Snow if given enough time. It couldn’t have been worse than the one flavor “I dun wan it” white bread we got by the end 🙄
tldr: just bc it could have been done better doesn’t mean it would have been good. A bad arc is a bad arc no matter how logical.
Also side note: it’s hilarious to me when people say this and then also try to argue that “she’s been this way the whole time you just didn’t see it” (and people have said this to me) like wut? That doesn’t make any sense. She can’t be both the hero that becomes the villain and secretly the villain the whole time. you can’t fall from hero to villain if you were never the hero
If she was always a secretly a villain then her becoming a villain would have inherently made sense in hindsight but you just admitted that it didn’t... so what’s the story chief? She mad or ain’t she? 🤣
