The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Paterson
Friends and foes may scab my bones. Their words will never be worthy.
For every reason
the sides of
the creases of
my smile are
upturned at
our “laughing until we bleed,
there is no one else
we will ever need,
you are you and I am me”
friendship of futility;
there are a thousand and one more
in justification of every reason
I will never be sufficient
as someone who deserves your respect.
Psychic vampire you
seek the blood
of those who are
more blessed,
but you know well
and better than most
the whirling worlds
of weeping wisdom
that the facade
of a smile-shaped scar
can mask before it fades.
We are both familiar
with the incessant
ticking that precedes
the collateral damage
of your sharp-tongued
hand grenades.
We both know
emotions are
ever-fleeting
in their
ever-changing
“they’ll never
phase me”
manner
of prim and proper
pride
but you release
the vortex of waves
and send them my way
anyway.
I am not the sponge
dirty and discarded
after I have washed
your dishes clean
I am the fire
as it gloriously burns,
you are water,
quenching your thirst
exhausting my flames
you sweep it under
the rug and act
like we are the same.
I run towards the future
only to trip over
it edges - repeated history
piled up beneath it, protruding
from the ground we hoped
only our feet would acknowledge.
All we can do now is face it,
or I can push it towards
the ground again as I stand up.
Scrape the scabs off my knees
leaving smooth flesh
unless you look closely
we are smooth sailing
unless we look closely
at the turbulence
our shape-shifting hands
of pride and ignorance
have created.
