i'm currently reading northanger abbey by val mcdermid for my english exam, and it’s fine it’s just not as good as i was hoping. you can really tell when adults try to write as teenagers - the voice is never quite authentic. it’s quite jarring to read this version of na as mcdermid jumps between complex language and OMG totes amazing within a few sentences.

Check out this book on Goodreads: Eligible: A Modern Retelling of Pride and Prejudice (The Austen Project, #4) One of the most hilarious books I have ever read! I was laughing out loud while deer hunting with my husband in a blind. This is more of an adult book and I highly recommend it to my teaching friends who would like a little laugh in their life. You do not need to read Pride and Prejudice to enjoy this story. However if you did like the book or movie you will defiantly enjoy this modern real of the Austen classic.

The 2015 Book Challenge Review: Emma

Emma by Alexander McCall Smith Solid 3 Stars

This is the third book I've read in the Austen Project series.  If you don't know much about the project, the idea behind it being that contemporary authors adapt the classic Austen books with a modern twist.  If I'm being honest, the Project has been a bit of a failure in my eyes.  Every book I've read of it so far (Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey which I couldn't finish and Emma) has been a massive let down.   Emma is the retelling by AMS, Emma is a privileged country girl, finding some things to do to fill her time.  The stock characters are there.  The story follows as with the original. I read a review that summed up quite well the problem with this story – Alexander McCall Smith writes like he hates the original.  Which is a bit odd.  It's like he's rolling his eyes as he writes.  Which leaves a bitter taste because there are some great parts of the story, and it's like he's missed the point.   Of the three it is the better book, but it's still not what I wanted from this series.   Hopefully with the next publication Eligible (Pride and Prejudice) will  live up to expectations.

Jane Austen Rewriting!

I am probably the last person to jump on the bandwagon, but just in case somebody did not know yet - Harper Collins started the “Austen Project” a few years ago, which is a series of authors re-writing / re-imagining Jane Austen’s six novels.

“Emma” by Alexander McCall Smith “Northhander Abbey” by Val McDermid and “Sense & Sensibility” by Joanna Trollope  have already been published and received good reviews and ratings on goodreads. 

Next up is supposed to be “Pride and Prejudice” by Curtis Sittenfield, to be published April 19th 2016. 

All of the “new” novels are also to be released in German, by the way.
