I have my queue up with about 30 posts and there’s an ask I reblogged but I’m not sure when it’s going to post… That being said I want to address something I’ve been thinking about tonight, even before I saw that ask. Over the past couple days, I’ve reblogged a TON of posts about DWSA. I love this cast and love these people (and yes I love Andy unapologetically I’m slowly realizing a lot of people really have big beef with him and I get that and respect it). I also think Andy, Michael Arden and the Deaf West creative team did a fantastic job of creating a beautiful, worth while, meaningful piece of art and I think that they really brought some things to light on broadway that are so essential. Without this production, I would still not have any interest at all in SA. With that said, I have HUGE problems with Spring Awakening as a show - the biggest being that its portrayal of innocence and unawareness completely contradicts the actions of characters such as Ernst and Melchior. I think the way the book bypasses subjects such as rape, abuse, and other matters, putting the blame elsewhere and completely missing such a vital point, is disgusting and outdated, therefore rendering the show's central theme completely invalid. I would also argue that the music is in no way creative, everyone consistently talks about how in so many of the songs they have no clue what is being talked about and they often seem to just be fillers making up for the lack of creativity. I have decided I want to write more about these things and be more opinionated out loud, and so with all this said I hope I’ve clarified that I love deaf west and the cast and their take, but I do not love spring awakening.
