Tuesday: Rep. Joe Walsh belittles challenger Tammy Duckworth
Congressman Joe Walsh, a Tea Party Republican from Illinois’ 8th district, is up against Iraq veteran Lt. Col. Tammy Duckworth in November’s election. In a press release on Tuesday, Walsh chided Duckworth for speaking at the DNC when he thought she should have been meeting with voters in the district. He also complained that the two haven’t had enough debates and reverted to sexism to try to shame her for it.
It has become abundantly clear that at this point the only debate Ms. Duckworth is actually interested in having is which outfit she’ll be wearing for her big speech.
The worst part about this for me isn’t the sexism; it’s the fact that Rep. Walsh thinks he has the authority to dictate “appropriate” actions to a woman. Doing this also diminishes her military career as a Lieutenant Colonel and assumes that she, as a disabled veteran who was able to overcome her injuries and run for Congress, isn’t able to make decisions more important than personal fashion.
Wednesday: Obama not “authentically black”
In response to Michelle Obama’s stellar DNC speech Tuesday night, blow-hard radio host Rush Limbaugh felt threatened enough by the First Lady’s story of her and the President’s humble beginnings that the racism spewed on his show the next day was astounding.
[Barack] Obama did not grow up in poverty. His grandmother, the typical white woman, worked in a bank. Don’t give me this ‘down in the struggle’ business. He wasn’t down. In 2008, the Democrats were wringing their hands because he wasn’t authentically black…He wasn’t down with the struggle. He doesn’t have slave blood.”
President Obama isn’t “authentically black” because he doesn’t have slave blood in him? (Which is, as it turns out, untrue.) A person is only “authentically” Black if their ancestors were slaves? A link to slavery makes you authentic? What does he mean by “authentic”? And all this talk about “down with the struggle”…Code words, people.
