I promised big news. Here it is: My second novel, Makeweights, is now officially under contract with a book publisher. Can't say with whom, and am not allowed to even say when, but it's arriving sooner than you probably think. The publishing company has been incredible! Look for my second novel, where Hot Fuzz meets Star Trek, coming soon!!! It's an intense sci-fi comedy about two overlooked researchers thrust into being heroes when they're not ready for it. They're not the heroes the Galaxy needs, but right now, they're the only ones around. Want to thank everyone who helped me through this process, but especially need to give a shout out to @aylasecura. The book is dedicated to her as our friendship was the inspiration for this entire book. Not many friendships are strong enough to write an entire novel about, but this absolutely was! One of the recurring question during my latest writing lecture was, "When do you write?" As a father of four with a full-time job, the answer is here. I'm at swim lessons for my older kids. While I was there I finished a massive business email that'll help shape the next few months, likely years. After that, I worked on edits for an anthology. Many look for the "perfect writing situation." I'm here to tell you that unless you're drowning in money and time, it won't exist. It's finding small windows and doing the work, even if the setting isn't perfect. For me, it's writing during my commute to work by taking public transportation and using noise canceling headphones. Then using evenings a couple times a week toward business and advertising efforts. Is it perfect? Hell no. There are days the bus driver hits the brakes a little hard, jostling me in the middle of writing a great line of dialog, or the rough road makes editing really frustrating. But the thing is this matters enough to me to make it work, when I can. There is no magic formula, it's making it work regardless of challenges because it gives you life and is what drives you. That's it. Find the time, know there may be interferences and challenges, and give yourself time to relax too. It's a constant scheduling shift and creating habits to keep a healthy balance. Hit send on a brand new project for consideration. Loved, LOVED writing this so enthusiastic and hopeful it finds a home. Won't know if it's on to the next step until April though! Would lose my shit if it went into production. It's something I would want to see come to life, which is what made it such a blast to write.
