I am thrilled to tell you that this Wednesday, April 24th, I will be a speaker and guest at Out at CHM, the Chicago History Museum’s event on queer speculative fiction, which is part of their 15-year-long series on LGBTQ culture in Chicago. I want to tell you why I am on the panel: Six years ago, when I was living in New York, I published a book called How to Kill a Superhero using the pen name Pablo Greene (in honor of Jorge Luis Borges). When the book launched, I used the Pablo persona as a way to express myself visually and represent those queer books to the world. In that same year, 13 Secret Cities, the first novel in my nine-volume fantasy saga The Coil, published. And as each of those two book series started to grow, so did my forays into exploring my identity through visual media. HTKS are books that take the obsessions with superheroes to an extreme degree, and they feature LGBTQ characters of the type that you will never see in a Marvel or DC movie (or at least not yet). Last year, I published 9 Lords of Night, the second book of The Coil, and that series has also found a loyal following of readers who want to know why Aztec gods are returning to our world rom another dimension. Many of you don’t know the whole story of how my seven published books came to be, and this is that story, so far. Along the way, I also launched LED Queens, a fitness apparel line that is inspired by my two book series, and has become an entity all of its own. I am Cesar and Pablo at the same time, and that duality is going to be something I will discuss at Out at CHM this Wednesday.
