Marie Antoinette pearl auctioned for record £28m

A pearl and diamond pendant that belonged to ill-fated French Queen Marie Antoinette has been sold for £28m in what Sotheby's auction house says is a world record for a pearl.  The star lot at Sotheby's Geneva show was bought after a fierce bidding war. It had been valued at about £156.

The previous record for the most expensive pearl jewel was a necklace once owned by the late Dame Elizabeth Taylor. It was sold for $11.8m at Christie's auction house in 2011.

Roots, Rock, Auction: Online Silent Auction to Benefit Alpha Institute

Tanya Batson-Savage (Susumba) writes about an online silent auction that the Alpha Institute (formerly the Alpha Boys School) is hosting as part of its 2017 Reggae Month activities. Prizes include one of a kind items and “reggae experiences” that stretch from Jamaica to the UK. The auction opened on February 1, 2017, and continues through February 28, 2017.

In Batson-Savage’s words, “the auction continues Alpha’s bid to leverage its contribution to Jamaican music legacy in order to sustain its music training and skills development services.”
