Portrait of Dorset Rena Gardiner Her second book, taking her several years to complete, was only published in an edition of 30, more for friends than wider publication. It is the only survivor of her books that I have, aside from her Dorset trilogy, but the best. She was absolutely remarkable, researching, drawing, then autolithographing direct to zinc plates and printing everything from her cottage press. Later distributing from her cottage until taken up by the National Trust. The genius of self-publishing. Travellers’ Verse Edward Bawden Bawden’s first book after WW2, commissioned as one of the New Excursions into English Poetry series. Bawden autolithographed this at the Curwen Press, where he had also started work on The Arabs. He found the whole process of lithography bewildering at first and managed to persuade Harold Curwen to come out of retirement to advise him. The Pigeon Ace Enid Marx My favourite of the clutch of children’s books Marco illustrated during WW2. A tale of a brave pigeon who carries messages for the RAF. Her delight in pattern and texture is evident and this was printed at one of the great lithographer, The Baynard Press. It was modelled on Phyllis Ginger’s Alexander the Circus Pony, also printed at Baynard. Animals of India Arnrid Johnston A selection of her autolithographs from her Puffin Picture Book. There is currently a very welcome resurgence in focus on the women artists and illustrators of the last century and I hope Arnrid gets a mention. She studied at the Slade and went on to lithograph a good number of children’s books, posters for London Transport, and London Zoo. Life in an English Village Edward Bawden Bawden and Noel Carrington’s exploration and celebration of the English Village, and it’s post-war role. Bawden’s lithographs were based on Great Bardfield, his home, and feature local tradespeople. His friend John Aldridge sits in the pub whilst the local Bobby nips in for a half. The chair on the cover is placed off-centre, yet when the shadow is taken in then the composition is neatly centred, a designers touch! Village and Town S R Badmin The genius of Badmin perfectly expressed in his work for the Puffin Picture Book series. In this title Badmin and Carrington summarise the challenges of post-war teconstruction and celebrate the diverse architecture of England, it’s towns and villages. Battle of Hastings Clarke Hutton Detail from a Picture History of Britain, drawn direct to the lithographic plates and printed by Cowell’s in Ipswich.
