The Pigeon Ace Enid Marx My favourite of the clutch of children’s books Marco illustrated during WW2. A tale of a brave pigeon who carries messages for the RAF. Her delight in pattern and texture is evident and this was printed at one of the great lithographer, The Baynard Press. It was modelled on Phyllis Ginger’s Alexander the Circus Pony, also printed at Baynard. Hyacinth Pink James Fitton Illustration from Stella Mary Peace’s children’s book for Alan Wingate, who also published an Enid Marx children’s book in the same year. Fitton was a founding member of the AIA, one of the three ‘Jimmies’ and also a prolific poster designer, for London Transport, The Ministry of Food, and Ealing Studios. I’m not sure if he illustrated other children’s books, but this is the only one I’ve come across.
