french speakers don't have to worry about discreet (subtle) vs. discrete (distinct)...they just spell 'em the same. bam. problem solved. of course that gives them a different problem (is any given 'discret' being used to mean "subtle" or "distinct"?), but context probably solves that one most of the time.
also i love the usage note in wiktionary for the english word discreet: "Although cognate and identical in the Middle English period, the term has become distinct from discrete." oh cool so you're saying discrete and discreet are discrete entities? well how about that...
