FMABRUARY DAY 6 | AUTOMAIL
Automail + metal rendering study! Drawing part is easy since I have my own automail for reference however the rendering part was a pain in the ass
Doodlin'
I like how Ed could never just use alchemy to fix his arm. Automail prosthetics are complex and require a specialized mechanic to deal with. This maintains Winrey’s relevance (and adds to the themes of interconnected support) and keeps the stakes up when Ed breaks his arm. If also keeps alchemy from being to busted and reminds us that there are things alchemists can’t do that other people can. It’s just good realistic writing.
Edward Elric doodles I did
One was based off that one character sheet of him
I'm not the only one who worries about how Ed's arm suddenly reappearing over the automail port would probably mess up the shoulder joint more than it's already been messed up, right?
Like, was Truth kind enough to take the port out before putting the arm back? Cause that's not what it looks like.
Yk sometimes i really wish we got like a whole two episodes or something just absolutely DEDICATED to automail. No side story, no nothing, just pure automail. How its made, how its assembled, how it works internally ugh i would give anything to see one episode like that. Because i look at frames like this where it shows the underside of eds automail and i just think how COOL it is.
like what is that black part made out of, how are the nerve even connected. How is the fuck is the body able to withstand the weight of the automail literally bolted into the bone. Obviously ik its almost purely fictional but when i look at it from a real world perspective it makes me cringe how painful the procedure must be. If theres some kind of sketch or mini comic out there from the mangaka that goes more into detail pls share. Winry rockbell you are the goat.
When Armstrong and Ed (and Al in the cargo bay) are on their way to see Winry and get Ed's automail fixed, it's a great opportunity for exposition about automail in this world. But ...
Armstrong hasn't heard of an automail mechanic?
Automail seems to make sense to him - he's not asking about that, but I wonder if he's removed from the process due to privilege, or if automail has several different stages with different workers involved, and 'automail mechanic' is a more specialised role? Because yeah, Ed explains she's all these things rolled into one.
So in their world, the more familiar process (maybe more common in the city) is usually there's a surgeon working on the person's injury, a prosthesis maker (helping with measurements/specifications??), and an automail engineer creating the automail (I assume the prosthesis maker would work with them to personalise for the injury??). But Winry, working rurally, has to fill all three jobs.
What do YOU guys do while waiting for repairs?
She needs new hobbies.....
