As we all know, rock and roll is made by Satanists intent on hiding subversive messages in their devil music. But what if I told you that all musicians are, in fact, colossal nerds, and those messages are actually all in Morse code?

Two years ago, Murray A. Lightburn began writing songs that clearly did not fit previous expectations, evoking the dark imagery of Dune, the humor of Slaughterhouse Five and the urgency of Jesus Christ Superstar. To say MASS: LIGHT is Lightburn's long-awaited solo-release is an understatement. The album is an electro pop opera he performs on drum machines and synthesizers. Inspired musically by the 80's soul and funk he grew up on, Murray has crafted modern orchestral timbres drawing from disco to electronica: The Dazz Band meets Phil Spector, Rick James fused with Wendy Carlos. He is now in the process of finalizing production on an acoustic version of the album.
Murray Lightburn's solo acoustic recording is an extension of MASS:LIGHT, expanding on a sound that is a major divergence from his music with The Dears. What began as an album comprised of synthesizers and drum machines, has been further stripped down to simply vocals and a guitar. The acoustic version further highlights Lightburn's incredibly skillful songwriting skills, highlighting the dark imagery and imagination of MASS:LIGHT, in an intimate and informal soundscape.

Scion Sessions gets personal at the 2013 Squamish Valley Music Festival with the quickly rising Vancouver four-piece electronic sensation, Bear Mountain. Their sound can be described as a prismatic compilation of sythns, a touch of dub, a sprinkle of sound bytes, a ton of dance, and a lot of soul. Bear Mountain, amongst other Vancouver favorites, brought a welcomed local flavor to the tremendous 2013 lineup. Founders of Ottawa's now infamous Electric Pow Wow parties, A Tribe Called Red first found local notoriety for their original mix of contemporary electronic sounds and traditional powwow music. Their self-titled debut landed them on the Polaris long list, but the leap to 2013's "Nation II Nation" drew even greater acclaim and a place amongst the 10 short listers. With the help of Tribal Spirit Music, they took advantage of unprecedented access to multitrack powwow recordings to produce a cohesive, original set of songs that bridge the gap between the band's roots and the massive festivals stages they occupy today.
