As for the rest—well, I’m hoping it’ll reveal itself somewhere along the journey.

Chapter 9 summary: Ava, Jude, Miles, Romy, Raine, Ever, and Damen sit around and try to puzzle this out. Only Damen is still onboard with “this is stupid”, so just imagine him making a sour face and sour comments the entire chapter.

They say that the lotus flower is known for growing out of the mud, and is typically seen as a symbol of rebirth. This book isn't even trying to be subtle anymore.

They continue to talk about all of the clues for a long time without actually getting to any point.

“So what do you make of it?” Ava swings her wavy auburn locks over her shoulder and levels her brown eyes on me, lowering herself onto one of the old plastic fold-up chairs Jude dragged into his office in an attempt to accommodate us all in this impromptu meeting.

“So, she thinks you’re Adelina, or that you were Adelina, or … whatever…” Miles frowns...

SUDDENLY!! MINOR BACKGROUND CHARACTERS!!

“I’m afraid that’s your journey, Ever. Yours and yours alone. Only you can discover which path to take. I’m only here as your friend.”

Chapter 16 summary: So Ever finally admits that her finishing school at this point is a goddamned wast of her time.

She goes to Lina's memorial, where she runs into Ava. Ava says that she saw Lina's spirit briefly while Jude was speaking, and that it was beautiful.

Ever then mulls over about how, despite all of the awful shit that Damen did, both to her but also to her past lives (buying slave!Ever and not the rest of her family so that he could keep her to himself), she still kind of wants him.

Without being told, I know exactly how to proceed. So I rise from my seat, give a silent nod of thanks, and make my way back to the earth plane.

Chapter 30 summary: Ava gives Ever lessons on how to control things to get her shadow monster to go away. I cannot express to you how much that I don't fucking care about any of this.

They're at the beach, and Damen is surfing. Stacia comes over and teases Ever about being pale, which makes Ever break the promises she made not to get angry over dumb shit anymore.

After a while, Ever goes to the summerland, where she then goes to the great hall. For the first time this book, she's allowed inside. There, she watches the life of Roman unfold. And maybe it's tragic a little, sure. But it excuses nothing, and I don't know why Ever seems to think that it does. But she also realizes what she needs to do.

Tracing my finger around and around the rim of the saucer, weighing my choices, which are admittedly few, and lifting my gaze to meet hers as I smile and say, "Word."

Chapter 28 summary: After an unholy amount of small-talk about the twins, they finally start to get to the real meat of the issue. Ever is still going into this kicking and screaming, even though she KNOWS Ava can seriously help her.

The book then spends even longer talking about magical mumbo-jumbo. It basically boils down to: when you're scared of something, you notice it more. And that's where Ever went wrong. She's been so focused on avoiding Roman and finding a cure for Damen that... the spell misfired.

Ava goes on to say that the darkness was inside of Ever the entire time. Which is what Roman said, too. But Ava makes it sound better than what Roman said. If only because she starts to quote Jung... and then when she brings out a literal psychology textbook, my eyes glaze over even more and I completely lose what little interest I had.

"I'm afraid that's for you to discover all on your own. But believe me, Ever, I've no doubt it's going to be big."

Chapter 23 summary: Ever is reluctant to go to her “surprise” party, but goes anyway. At Ava's house is obviously Ava but also the twins, since they live there now. But also Jude, and for some unholy reason, Honor shows up.

Ever mopes about the loss of Haven, and fails to miss what I've been saying since the first book: Haven was a shitfuck friend, and now the mask is fully off and Ever actually sees her for who she has been this entire time.

Ava finally explains what happened: she promises that she was never in league with Roman, and only knew him from a reading she did once. After that night when she abandoned Damen, she went on a journey of self-discovery in the summerland. She then tells Ever that she has her own path to walk, but she alone must discover and walk it for herself.

Ava, dressed in a brown strapless dress and gold sandals, casual y helping herself to a drink that's suspiciously red. " Sangria," she says, shaking her head and laughing when she adds, "Really, Ever, just how long will it take for you to trust

me again?"

Maybe when I'm certain that you're not trying to kill me and my boyfriend and anybody else I might love. And that you're not working for the person dead-set on actually seeing me and my boyfriend and anybody else I might love ACTUALLY MURDERED.

Pausing briefly before turning toward the building, leaving me gaping, speechless, as those grand, imposing doors open before her and welcome her in.

Chapter 14 summary: Ever goes to the Summerland on her own. But she feels desolate without Damen, so she just wanders around and mopes for a while.

She eventually decides to try and go to the giant library thing, but she can't see it anymore, because she's been blacklisted from the place.

As she's turning to go, she runs into Ava. Remember her, the one who apparently sold out Damen to Roman because reasons? And who also apparently sold out Haven, too? Yeah, well... she's here. She tries to explain to Ever what happened... but Ever refuses to listen. You know, kind of like how Damen was with her not even five minutes earlier. Ugh.
