There's always a renewed urgency to stay in control when Ava's gone. He can't depend on her being minutes away to push and shove his thoughts back into place. There's just him, and while part of him thinks those are hilarious expectations, considering, the rest of him just buckles down and does what he has to.

It usually results in him spending more time at the gym, and today was no exception. He's aware that he should be tired now, that his body should ache, his muscles protest the heavy workout he put himself through. They don't. Muscle strain is just one more thing that heals as soon as it happens, and he almost misses the burn that comes with that kind of effort.

There's steam still heavy in the air from his shower, distorting the image in front of him, and for a moment it settles in the thought that he might not get any older than this. That he'll be stuck in time, body constantly healing itself from every hurt, including those that come with time. The thought strikes him as incredibly isolating, so it's almost funny that it's followed by the sound of keys in the door.
